Hello all!
You might remember this mare from a while ago. I posted about her when we were getting ready to chose a stallion for her in the 07' season. Well, funds had to be redirected to an unexpected emergency and we didn't get to breed her.
But, this year we have relocated to KY (Lexington) and are ready to try again. She's been inspected and cleared for breeding.
She's the 89' model and was used for sport horse breeding. Raced until she was 12! Any suggestions for her under 5k? We're looking to keep and race the resulting foal ourselves.

I like her with Hero's Tribute.
She was a hardknocking mare and Hero's Tribute was more of the same. The cross brings in a RF to top class and influential broodmare Quill.
It also brings in 3 lines of Northern Dancer through top class individuals. He fits into your budget and I'm sure you can get him for even less if you asked.

More Quill
If you don't mind the multiple strains of Northern Dancer, look at Hero's Tribute ($5,000 at Buck Pond - http://www.bloodhorse.com/stallion-regi ... no=4451732). Doubling up on Quill is a big plus. Not a commercial pick, but might be a good match for a breed-to-race.

I hate to be negative but I dont really see any reason that this mare should be bred for racing purposes. Soundness is a good thing dont get me wrong but most often IMO horses such as this ran forever because they never could run fast enough to hurt themselves. I also believe its not a very good idea to breed older mares esp ones that have such little to offer. The reality is a colt oo this mare by Scrimshaw or Hero's Tribute probley would be a 1k yearling. I know you said your not breeding to sell but thats still not good to know from the start. I think a much better idea would be to save her board & stud fee & buy a young mare that may not have been a stakes mare but a decent runner that showed at least tactial speed & has some pedigree & is balanced, dont worry so much about size & minor conformation flaws. You would really be suprised what you can get for around 10k. I believe the key is to start well rather than constantly fighting a very steep uphill battle. If you start with a nice mare your stallions options open greatly as well rather than snatching reduced fees to already cheap stallions that will not even be in KY when your foal is a yearling. Again I know you stated your breeding to race but it is nice to have options.
