WERK A++ 14586%

Postby griff » Wed May 21, 2008 8:35 pm

First, I do not wish to start the debate on WERK and dosage all over again so just say they are a tool that may have some value to some of us.

With that out of the way, I was at Northview today and the staff ran a WERK report on one of our mares with all their stallions and I went into an alert when I saw the Domestic Dispute X Jason's Hope nick produced a WERK A++ 14586%

Jason's Hope is in-foal to Not For Love and that nick produces a pedigree suitable for framing with a WERK A+ 558% and a dosage profile of 11-4-16-0-1.
3S x 3D to Numbered Account
3S X 4D X 5D to Northern Dancer
4S X 4D to Buckpasser
5S X 5D to Princequillo

I'm very pleased with the NFL X Jason's Hope nick but wondered at the significance of the Domistic Dispute X Jasons Hope WERK A++ 14586%
dosage profile = 2-4-9-1-0
4S X 4D x 5D to Northern Dancer
5D x 5D to Princequillo.

In that report are listed 2 stakes horses winning 3 races. It appears to be based on a small sample. I have never seen +14000 ever.

Personally, I think the rating is very misleading. Domestic Dispute's first foals are two year olds this year, and I don't know of any that have started yet, let alone won a stakes race. The nick report you were shown can not possibly provide any data for how Polish Numbers's daughters have crossed with him. It may have relevance if you were breeding her to Unbridled's Song, assuming that Unbridled's Song has been bred to daughters of Polish Numbers, or it may be based on a cross of Unbridled or Unbridled's Song with Danzig mares.

That said, Unbridled's daughters have crossed pretty well with sires with Buckpasser in the dam, so Unbridled, especially as the broodmare sire, might go well with a Polish Numbers mare.

griff,

for what it's worth: I have a yearling colt out of a Polish Numbers mare and, although i haven't run a Werk nick on him, the new "TrueNicks" rating for the Domestic Dispute cross is also high (A++).

It is nice to know and I hope all the buyers get really psyched up by Nick ratings (Werk or Truenicks), but I cannot put a lot of faith in a system that ignores one-half (i.e. the females) of the pedigree. If choosing between two potential sires and all other factors in the mating are equal, I would go with the choice that had the better Nick rating but i would never rely on the Nick rating alone.
