Pedigree Query

Her performance record is ... subpar (to say the least) but I really like her.
She's well put together, is actually level headed and competitive (just smallish).
She didn't have a good "track experience" so her career won't continue (even though it was improving - for all THAT is worth!).
Sport or race? And to which lines (if you please). I have a stallion in mind, just because I luvvv everything about him, and his daddy's foals seem to all have that temperament (IME).
Her name (prospective dam) is Banderita. Her dam didn't do so well either, but her 2nd dam seems okayish?
Could you share insight please? TIA!

I wouldn't breed her, if she's that nice looking retrain her for a riding horse. She he has nothing IMO to cause me to want to breed her. Just my two cents worth.

Thanks... that's a start for my education. Obviously it wouldn't be for a commercial foal (it'd be a keep it and go from there on direction).
Part of the sad thing with her is that she lost partial sight in one eye from her time at the track, so unfortunately a show ring career for herself is out.
Is she that nice? Yes. Quirky (do not EVER look like you're intending to bull your way with her - she's learned to fight back), but still a jaw dropper. I'd like to see some more size, but she's got the rest on her own.

You may want to post a photo of your mare and the stud that you're considering. Perhaps, that will prompt additional feedback.

What size is your mare? If she's really small and you're interested in sporthorses - take a look at ponies and the prices that they bring - they're very expensive. Your mare may be perfect to breed to a really great pony stud for an awesome event prospect. She's classy and has guts - just what's needed...

What is her size? What about her conformation? Is she quite correct? She certainly won't attract on the sales, so if you decide to go forward it should be for racing. I like Notebook as a broodmare sire but from her dam side she looks quite empty.

I think this filly has a great upside as a broodmare prospect. I love El Gran Senor as a broodmare sire (Banderita's BM sire). Banderita's stakes placed half sister, First Flag, is producing some very nice runners, and has some younger well bred progeny that look to help the catalog page in the future. First Flag's Gonetofarr is a stakes winner of over a quarter of a million dollars, and has a Fusaichi Pegasus baby coming up. Duet is stakes placed, and Clemens and Peace First look like they might turn into nice runners. El Gran Senor crossed with Gone West has produced some very good performers, so this might be something to examine. I do like Notebook as a broodmare sire with potential. I have seen very successful broodmares with a lot less going for them than Banderita, especially on a regional level.

I agree with Bill, there's some upside to this filly. The family and page is good enough to give her a chance, especially since she's by the good broodmare sire Notebook.

Notebook is underrated and was always undervalued but he brings some great genetic material to the table.

As Bill asked, location, price and intention is important before giving suggestions.

I tried to post an update and some answers a few days ago when the server was wonky and told me I'd deleted the entire thread!
The filly is very correct, but not tall (15.1 or 15.2 now), very nice for hunter movement (if that's how it goes).
She's confirmed in foal to Hard Currency for next year.
I loved him - so wanted a foal from HIM and when I got a good look at this filly, it was a hmmm?
One thing I'll say, in checking through, I wouldn't want to own a stallion and have her dam come up in the breeding books!
So far, it seems a common thing that with the majority of foals she has had (2 out of 3), the sire dies for one reason or another after she's covered

I agree with Bill about this mare - she has some things going for her. Although, to be clear - First Flag is a half to this mare's dam. But, it is a nice family that is still active and being bred to some very nice stallions. Plus, Banderita's dam is very young and there is a real possibility of improvement on the page.

Thanks to Sock Monkey for pointing out my error re: First Flag. Sock Monkey's points are all valid, and I still think there are lots of good things happening with the family. This is the same family as that of of Champion Old Hat, and the good runners and sires Explodent and Exbourne. Banderita's conduit mare, Arline, imparts brilliance into the pedigree since most of her descendants excelled sprinting. However, there are ample doses of stamina elsewhere. The mating with Hard Currency adds more pedigree influenced stamina, and the overall pedigree created by this union looks good. Hard Currency is also in demand as a sport horse sire, so it looks like you've got all your bases covered.

My 2 cents for what is might be worth:

Why rule out a show carreer because she is blind in 1 eye? My best hunter mare was kicked at a young age and is blind in her left eye (very deformed). She has a long list of show credits to her name. She just finished competing in a Mini Prix where she went 4'3"h w/ a 5' spread and the Medi Prix which she won at 4'6"h with a 5' spread. She is now headed to the Maxi Prix in 3 weeks (she is now 17 years old). She has too many championships and reserves to her name. She pins in every class she has ever been in and was ECTA Thoroughbred Hunter Chamion for 2006. She took 2 kids through their OEF Rider Levels in 2006 as well. So do not rule out a show carreer, these TB's are talented and can really surprise you!
