Breeding my Marsayas mare
I have a mare by Marsayas (Damascus)o/o Sioux City Su, second dam is Ride The Trails (dam of Cozzene). I am looking for a stallion in PA to breed her to. Any ideas??? Her name is Hold The Rain.

Hm. Well Damascus seems to LOVE Northern Dancer in this kind of situation, and Hail to Reason figures in also. Damascus over Prince John produced Medaglia d'Oro with El Prado on top... in your place with this mare I would take a serious look at Senor Swinger. According to the Stallion Register, they are offering a discounted fee to PA foaling mares. And $2500 is about EXACTLY what I would spend on a fee for this mare.

SO what your saying is the mare isn't good enough to be bred to a "better" stallion?
Better than what? More expensive doesn't mean better. Hold the Rain is a 16 year old mare whose best runner to date earned $16,920, suggesting that either she (A) has been poorly mated or (B) should hang it up. What you do with your money and your mare is your business. The LAST horse I would consider is the highly unsound Buddha. The MOST that I personally would consider spending on this mare for a stud fee is $2500 because no matter what you pay in stud fees, in my opinion, you will not get a sales foal from this mare, and PA has quite a lot of stallions in that lower price range. So you are breeding to race. So for that, I personally like a stallion who retired at 6 after 37 starts, and could RUN. Just my opinion, though, no need to get all hot about it.

I think she has been poorly mated in the past also, this is why I don't want to make the same mistake as the people I bought her from. Do you believe Mustanfar would be a good match? I do like Senor Swinger and he is close to me. Special Times is another I do like also, but not sure he would work well with her. I do value your opinion due to the fact you have been at this much longer than I.

I like Senor Swinger for her, too. He has good connections and should have some decent commercial appeal, too. I haven't seen him in person, or even seen a conformation photo of him, though.
I think SS will be more commercial than than Mustanfar. I also like your mare on an El Prado more than an Unbridled stallion. Although, I do like Mustanfar as far as durability. And, from the pics, he looks like a nice big horse.

Mustanfar is in KY, which would reduce the foal's PA eligibility to PA bred rather than PA sired. The awards are less. To maximize your potential return, if the pedigree and conformation match up well, you will be better off with a registered PA sire, in my opinion. Anyone in PA looking to buy something to race will also consider the eligibility factor.

Good lord, you ASKED for opinions and got a wonderful response from a resident expert on breeding.... use something with Northern Dancer. I think I'd be more careful about asking favors on breedings if I were going to blatantly snub the more experienced posters to this list.
We all like to offer suggestions, but I'll not waste time on someone who just plows through with their own opinions and isn't appreciative of other more experienced people.
What on earth excites you with Patton and your mare? I hate to ask... but I was in total agreement with Madelyn. I would have suggested Partner's Hero if he were still around.

In my opinion Madelyn is with her feet on the ground. I will go a little bit further than her. This mare is a 16 year old model with a decent pedigree, but hasn't showed anything in her produce record. I would not spend any money in this mare. She's been quite accurate in her comments, so don't take it wrong. BTW, Buddha is an excellent example of the power of marketing. He brings down your mares significantly. In addition it contains the Unbridled's Song's tendency to brittleness.
Breeding this mare involves too much risk for me, regardless you intend to race or sell.
