Onalimb, you might consider several stallions in the $5000 range for your girl.

Both Pleasant Colony and Rahy as broodmare sires do well with Mr. Prospector. If you want some Mr. P, consider Ontario sire A Fleets Dancer. He was a very good racehorse who has yet to have runners, a son of Afleet by Mr. Prospector out of a Vice Regent mare.

A son of Mr. Prospector in Ontario that has already had success with your mare's tail female line is Porto Foricos, sire of My Vintage Port, the 2yo Champion filly in Canada 2003. Your mare and MVP share the same 4th dam Boiseana. Ontario also has good breeders/owners premiums.

I'll warn others who may be tricked by the two Wild Applause ladies in the database. This mare's 5th dam is born 1951, and is not the 1981 mare that bore Eastern Echo and who is the daughter of Glowing Tribute, dam of Sea Hero.

When I was chasing the red herring 1981 model of Wild Applause, I found a new sire in KY named Hero's Tribute, a son of Sea Hero. I like his pedigree also with your mare, but it's line-bred to many stayers, and would not likely be commercial.

Is New York a destination you might consider for your mare (and foal) ?

Thanks for the ideas, I purchased her with baby by side and a free breeding to man from eldorado for this year but next year I'll be looking for a stallion that will bring out the best of her femail line. I'm still learning pedigrees and appreciate all the experince that gathers to chat on this forum. Question? what should I look at when trying to pick stallions for my mares her femail line? sire line? outcrosses? inbreeding? ?????thanks

Onalimb, the answer to your question is e) All of the above. Ask us again after you've observed the board for a few months, as your frame of reference will no longer be an empty slate.

By the way, I agree with FOS that you should consider adding a strong speed influence, as your mare has lots of stayers. If you combine more distance ability in the pedigree of the foal, you're likely to produce a plodder rather than a runner. Maybe a great eventer, but not likely a racehorse.

Get you a print copy of one of the stallion directories or get them online, and peruse the pages, checking on the strength of the female family, the distances and quality of the races run by the stallion and that of his best progeny.

Dosage figures are a poor man's basis for determining distance proclivities, but they can be helpful to a beginner. You might want a stallion with a CD (center of distribution) in the +0.8 to 1.2 range. Those more positive numbers show that some recognized sprinter-producing sires exist within the first five generations, and are not overpowered by the staying sires and their closeness in the pedigree.

You should also consider buying a CD-ROM copy of the American Produce Records (APR). It shows the production records of thousands of dams in America and elsewhere, the number and quality of foals they produced, and over many generations.

Also learn to use the drop-down menus in the Pedigree database to better round out your information of linebreeding, inbreeding, female families, and hypothetical matings.

The free breeding to man from eldorado shouldn,t be bad at all, with cool
affair, as this one can use some sprint or routing influence. I would look at her conformation look how her muscles are, long muscles give an indication to stayers, most commonly seen with old types of tb,s.
Or the ones that are more compact build with short and thick masculation.
That indicates that she is already an more sprint routing type.
