Pedigree Query

I have a 95 mare that is about 11 3/4 months along. She still is not waxing. I had her checked 10 days ago and everthing is fine with the foal (heartbeat, position, etc). She was almost a year on her last foal. Is this uncommon? I wonder if anyone else has a mare that goes through this long of a gestation period? Just looking for a little support.

Well, never mind. Filly born last night. All I had to do was post and there she was this morning.

I am no expert, but I hear that there are quite a few mares that have longer gestations and there are mares that have babies "early". Sort of like people !

For example, every one of my aunt's four pregnancies went to 41+ weeks (one was nearly 44) and was fine, but a friend of mine has three kids and not one of her pregnancies went past 38 weeks. 40 is considered "average" but there is always variation! Same thing for horses and probably a lot of other beasties I hear .

Mare and filly are fine. I am in Utah and they are in Texas, so I have to rely on family and friends for updates, and thank goodness for cell phones and digital cameras. Heading home to see them on Derby weekend, though.

Congratulations on the new filly!

Last year a 20 year old mare of mine (or was it the year before?) foaled two weeks after the one year anniversary of her last breeding date. She bagged up early and we thought all was fine. But no foal. Finally, I had her preg checked and the vet's hand hit the foal's nose! She foaled shortly thereafter---a big, strong colt with lots of teeth! She cleaned up fine and got in foal in her first regular heat--and produced a second strapping colt, this time on schedule. She's now 22 and due to foal a third straight time in early April.

I say it's common. I had a mare carried 1 yr. & 10 days, but a very healthy baby. I wouls also prefer they carry a couple weeks over 334. I lost a filly on the 16th of this mont. She was born on the 14th (344 days)
She had a partial cleff pallette and had trouble getting up. Her back legs were to long and for the first 15-16 hrs. I had to pick her up, then she could get about. I stayed up for 2 days with her and had to help her nurse
cause she was to tall to find her mothers teat. Poor little girl, she was gorgeous and I miss her, she tried so hard the 2 1/2 days of her life. It was short but she left a lot memories.
So I wouldn't worry if she goes 12 months as long as you have her checked you should have a very healthy foal

I'm so sorry to hear about your lost foal. It's heart-wrenching, isn't it?! Especially when you had a chance to get attached.

My mare Shananies Presence was overdue for two weeks and last night she had a beautiful colt. She had 5 fillies in a row until this year. We are very excited being our very first foal.

This thread reminds me of a little while ago....not sure if it was Madelyn but someone waiting on a much overdue foal. I think it was Bill said go in and rub her belly and say BOO DAMNIT! She said it foaled the next day.....BOO DAMNIT.....to be named....lol. Hope my memory was correct and if the names are wrong my apologies. hehehe....still love thename...BOODAMNIT.

Sorry... that was the filly from the mare that arrived here already in foal to some junky stallion. She's okay, a bit odd... will probably unload her as a weanling for a riding horse.
