We have just purchased a nice 7 yr old Corporate Report mare "Sails Are Up" I have this mare in partnership (other family memebrs getting their feet wet in breeding) We are looking for a nice stallion for this mare in the $5000.00 fee range. In either NY or KY...any advise?

Mare has some blacktype in her femail family...not a ton but some. 1st dam is 1/2 to a graded stakes winner, 2nd dam is black typed placer and is also a 1/2 to stakes winner.

TIA!

Slew City Slew gets my vote (assuming you are breeding to race). From Airdrie's website -

A very useful and consistent producer of quality runners, short or long, dirt or turf. He crosses well with Mr. Prospector, Northern Dancer, Damascus, Hail to Reason, and Princequillo line mares.

I agree. Slew City Slew gets my vote too.

Another point about Slew City Slew... if Sis City gets the KY Oaks, do you think his fee will be the same next season?

I would say he will remain the same. He will be 22 next year, and most older stallions have decreasing book sizes as they age. Given that he has been a solid $5k horse for a while, I really don't see them raising it. He had some really solid performers in the past, and with the number of young, popular stallions in KY I just don't see how he would get the #'s that would validate an increase in stud fee at his age. If nothing else, it will give him a bigger book and better mares next year. JMHO

TBLady, depending on your risk tolerance, and your ideas for sale or breed-to-race, here are some stallions in KY that look interesting on paper with your girl.

Silver Ghost, listed at $7,500, but you could probably get a better price. Good track record, solid sire. Builds on your Royal Charger and Grey Flight. Not commercial.

Slew City Slew, $5,000 as described; builds on your Nasrullah and Grey Flight. Not commercial.

Wild Wonder, $5,000, son of Wild Again, sire of this year's Fusaichi Rock Star, comes from prominent female family. Your mare also has some Khaled. Don't know how his foals will sell as he's getting discovered.

With Approval, $5,000, solid sire. Can't beat that female line.

If a son of Deputy Minister comes into view, consider him, since there is a definite nick of DM with Private Account.

Look at some 3rd and 4th year studs, as the farms might consider reducing their fees until their progeny prove themselves. You might be able to get a stallion with a fee listed higher than $5,000.

Hi TBLADY,

Both the grandsire and damsire of the mare point strongly to Nureyev as the key:

Private Account and Nureyev have combined close up in the Major GIWs Good Journey, Bluemamba, and East of the Moon. Pleasant Colony and Nureyev have combined close up in the Major Japanese Champion Tap To Music and Pleasant Colony's sire His Majesty is perhaps an even stronger nick, with the two combining in Parade Leader, a G2 winner of $720,000, his full brother Parade Ground, a 2xG2 winner of $794,000, Danestorm, a Winner QTC Brisbane Cup (AUS-GI), Vive, a Stakeswinning dam of the Canadian Triple Crown winner Peteski, and finally Desert King, a 3xGI winner and Irish Champion 3yo male of 1995 (Desert King is even better known as the sire of amazing Makybe Diva, the only filly in history to win the Melbourne Cup Twice).

Interestingly, Private Account's sire Damascus also forms a nick with Nureyev: The two combining in the 4 Time GIW Australian Derby Winner Sky Heights, the 2 Time GIW Australian Derby Winner Starcraft, the Fillies Mile (GB-GI) Winner Crystal Music, the St James (GB-GI) Winner Starborough, and the 5 Time G2W Filly Strut The Stage.

Also, your mare's 4x5 inbreeding to Ribot through the full brothers His Majesty and Graustark constitutes a major positive for crossing the mare with Nureyev as well given that Nureyev had a very strong general nick with that Undefeated Tesio bred ancestor.

Also also, Sails Are Up's 2nd dam produced a $475K+ earning G2W named Lottery Winner from the cover of Apalachee, a stallion from Nureyev's Rough Shod II female line.

I know he's in California, but you might be best off going with Nureyev's son Skimming as his damsrie Lyphard is also a powerful nick with Pleasant Colony and his sire His Majesty (see Pleasanty Perfect, Cetewayo, the French Oaks Winner Aquarelliste, the BC Steeplechase Champion Mcdynamo, and finally the GIW Full Brothers Valiant Nature and Tight Spot.

Another possiblity might be Nureyev's son Private Interview (whose in NJ).

A horse I really like in New York that stands for $5,000 is Thunderello. He was extremely fast, second in the Breeders Cup Sprint, and is by Montbrook out of an In Reality mare, so he fits the bill as a stallion prospect. Your mares pedigree has a number of stamina influences, so I like the balance that he could give.

llbean,

Nureyev looks good but if you had to limit it to NY or KY for $5,000 I would look at the best Mr Prospector line horse going around.

Coporate Report's best two as a broodmare sire are by CApe Town and Gold Fever while Private Account has really worked well with Mr P - Aldebaran, Miner's Mark, Bluemamba, Placerville etc.

I'd go with Gold Fever. Inbreed to like bred Arabian Dancer and Private Account (Damascus out of Buckpasser mares)

I would agree with Gold Fever as well who is an extremely underrated stallion in my opinion.

Two more in KY to look at are the proven Barkerville and the unproven new stallion Hero's Tribute.

Barkerville is about as solid as a sire you can get for the money. Real nice individual who is one of the best kept secrets around. He can get you anything at anytime. They're true runners.

Hero's Tribute is a very interesting cross to me. You have sex balanced inbreeding to Damascus 3sx4d through Eastern Dawn and Private Account. More sex balanced inbreeding to Graustark through Glowing Tribute and Key to the Mint. With this added Graustark you get more inbreeding thanks to the RF to Flower Bowl. This mating isnt as "intense" as it seems since most of it is through individuals who were of the highest calibre on the track and in the shed and who were also "warriors".

$5000 to spend on a stud fee

If the mare is in New York I would jump all over Mayakovsky. He was brilliant at two, won graded stakes at three and ran a 1:34 second mile on the grass at four. His babies are gorgeous.

In kentucky I would go to a Raise a Native line stallion and there are tons in the $5000 range. Millenium Wind was a high class horse by Cryptoclearance.

K One King, a son of Apalachee, stands at Gainesway for $3500.

Several horses to consider

I would consider several different stallions.

1. Snow Ridge $5,000 in Florida line breeding on Intriguing 5x5, Miss Disco 6x6, Key to the Mint 4x5

2. Duckhorn $2500 in Pennsylvania line breeding on Numbered Account 4x4

3. Roman Dancer $3500 in New York line breeding on Numbered Account 3x4, His Majesty 4x4,Flower Bowl 5x5x6 and Bold Ruler 5x5

FYI - IF Mayakovsky interests you "hurleynyc" of this forum has a season that they are willing to 'deal' on.....just scroll down thru the posted subjects under this subgroup - you'll find it:

"top NY stallion seasons - priced to sell/creative financing"

The video that the link hurlynyc provides of Mayakovsky shows a very nice looking individual with a good walk.
