Pride of New York -- Bloodlines to look for...

Postby Don Baker » Sat Jun 04, 2005 7:26 pm

I am a co-owner of Pride of New York, a young stallion standing his first season in Ontario, Canada. His pedigree is on this site. I would be interested in knowing what bloodlines you would look for, if you were wanting to maximize his breeding potential. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I would look for bloodlines that contain Nasrullah

Postby Keith » Sun Jun 05, 2005 8:52 am

I would look to line breed Nasrullah blood lines and blood that contains Great Above, Mr. Prospector, Roberto, Alydar, Sassafras, Green Dancer, Proudest Roman and so on. I would recommend mares by Holy Bull, Is It True, Yes Its True, Homebulider, Saros, Septieme Ciel, Hawkster, War Chant, Saratoga Six, Summer Squall, Charismatic, Malibu Moon, Safe in the USA, and Real Quiet to name a few. I would also consider Capote or Matty G. mares to line breed on Too Bald. Dayjur mares may be an interesting cross with the speed of Gold Beauty and she crossed well with Nijinsky II and Blushing Groom bloodlines. Entropy mares would also be an intersting cross where he is by What a Pleasure and out of Ta Wee. I would also consider Marfa mares.

Hi Don,

I second Henthorn's welcome. Good luck with your new stallion.

Did you race him or did the Bromans (I saw Chester and Mary at a seminar today in Hyde Park). Do you know how he got hurt? Can you give a physical description of him (faults and all)?

I've done a lot of racing in Canada, mostly at the Fort, winning the 2001 Centre Stage Anne with Tsakpina. I'm familiar with bloodlines and about 1 year stale in my knowledge of mares on the track.

Mt. Livermore is a solid sire, but more of an enigma for his get in the breeding shed. Peaks And Valleys and Housebuster might shed some light but I think you'll find that you have a wealth of blood that will prove to have affinity with your stallion in Canada.

Gainesway looked for Raise A Native in the mares bred to Mt. Livermore. Livermore was best out crossed unless you could get Nasrullah 4x4 but he had some flexibility, however he didn't cross well with Mr. Prospector directly and liked Green Dancer best of Northern Dancer's sons.

These things are helpful but without much meaning unless Pride Of New York has inherited the affinities from his father. Pride Of New York is 4x5 Nasrullah, as was Housebuster and Peaks And Valleys. I'm certain that you're aware that PONY (hmm - nice acronym) second dam La Chaposa was a fine race mare and the dam of You And I. There may be some help in looking at You And I and we find that his wonderful daughter You is by a daughter of Housebuster (a subverted son of Mr. Prospector).

There are three sires that are represented in abundance in Canada that I'd look to as the main sources of blood to breed to Pride Of New York; Bold Ruckus, Vice Regent (especially Silver Deputy but he's getting pricey), Sea Wall and Briartic. There are other stallions whose daughters should be in abundance and have value in a mating with PONY when their dam side fits; Barbeau, Dom Alaric, Tethra, War Deputy, Geiger Counter and Matter Of Honor . Frankly, I believe PONY fits far better with the mare base you have in Canada than in the States.

I'm not going to go into a lot of detail why like these stallions, but I'll list some of the benefits that they bring to a mating. I'd suggest simply taking the mares/fillies from these stallions (and lines) that you see - even at the Fort and hypo mating them with PONY and I believe you'll find that they are mostly solid outcrosses that leverage blood that's proven and probably affinitive.

If you read my posts about aggression, I DO feel that it is a component in understanding Mt. Livermore and breeding to his line. Livermore wasn't particularly successful with mares with Mr. Prospector close. That may change with PONY (or as the generations remove from Prospector and Livermore) but on the whole I'd look for weaker influences of Mr. P or where Mr. P. is in subverted form (dam side). Don't look to inbreed PONY on a regular basis. You may want to play with one or two inbreeds, but I don't think you'll get any bang for you buck with this tactic.

Silver Deputy is a marvelous broodmare sire already. He has Mr. Prospector (subverted) and brings a return of Too Bald. Look at the hypo mating of PONY / Silvery Bay. Silver Deputy is so special that I'd use about any mares from him that I could, but if I could be choosy, I'd want ones that were sound (PONY 2 races, Silver Deputy 2 races).

Bold Ruckus leverages the affinity for Nasrullah. I'd use his sons too, especially Bold N' Flashy. Bold Ruckus line is a solid choice since his dam is by Raise A Native. They'll bring some soundness too.

My ill fated mare Vice Coolo is a nice example of a hypo mating for PONY with a Bold N' Flashy mare.

Sea Wall is rather obvious. I'd want the dam side to contain some aggression - like Mr. Prospector. Sea Wall's a half brother to Mt. Sassafrass, one of Mt. Livermore's best.

Vice Regent tends to be a sire line that can catch affinities one generation behind other Northern Dancer sires. War Deputy could be a good choice too. Hypo mate PONY with Tsakpina as an example.

For Briartic hypo mate Big Julie (a west coast Canadian SW who sold for only $6,000 a few years ago).

You might even try daughters of Dance Brightly (he's a subverted son of Mr. P).

I can't comment on physical requirements for PONY without knowing more about him, but I think you have a rich mare base that can be acquired inexpensively and may well help prove your stallion.

Regards,

Pete

I feel line breeding Too Bald would give you a heavy influence of Nasrullah which has done well crossed with Mt. Livermore. I guess I would lean away from Seattle Slew because it has had not much success crossed with Mt. Livermore other than Compassionate who is by Housebuster and out of Adored. I would try Matty G. who by Capote and is is out of a great mare and has been a good sire. I would go for mares that contain the blood of Great Above.

Hi Keith,

Remember, the idea is to narrow a list of candidates.

Pride Of New York will be standing in Canada and Don will need to get his mares (outside ones at least) from the base there. Few of the stallions you mention are abundant in Canada.

I also think you might want to narrow your search. You're including horses that have little to offer other than a distant (4-5 generation) potential to double. Many on your list offer distant inherited affinities, and the further from the source the lesslikely they are to retain their affinity.

You can get an idea of the blood that's shaped Canadian racing in the pedigree of Vice Regent.

Regards,

Pete

Hi Pete and Keith,
Many thanks for your breeding suggestions. I have been on the road and haven't had a chance to digest the implications yet and to try some sample breedings to see what you are suggesting in detail. In any event, I much appreciate learning your thoughts. Also, thanks Henthorn for your welcome.
