Opinions sought - breeding WOLF POWER mare to THUNDER RUMBLE

Postby oakorchard » Mon Sep 12, 2005 5:01 am

I am looking at potential 2006 crosses for Override (WOLF POWER x Accadia Rocket). She is an attractive, 16.2 hand mare who won $73,518 before suffering sesamoid and splint bone fractures.

The mare is currently in foal to CRUSADER SWORD for March 2006.

The reason I am considering THUNDER RUMBLE (besides his G1 win and race accomplishments) is that his dam, LYPHETTE(FR) crossed very well on WOLF POWER, producing both G1-winning ALEMANIA and stakes-placed Wolf Spy from that cross.

Is it sound (or proven) logic to look to a stallion's first dam and how she crossed on certain lines for possible nicks? Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi oakorchard - Wolf Power mares have been decent, honest producers.Wolf Power daughters currently have produced 19 stakes winners from 525 foals and 3 of the stakes winner's are from the same mare. They seem to be working on a wide variety of pedigree's with an edge going to Northern Dancer,Neartic Line stallions.

Milwaukee Brew(Wild Again-Neartic)

Silver Nithi(Numerous-Mr. Prospector and out of Number by Nijinsky II-2nd dam produced Sadler's Wells)-I noticed that your mare is a half to a Grade 3 SP El Prado)

Stay Sound(Red Ransom-Roberto-2nd dam by Neartic)

Hurrahy(Rahy-Blushing Groom)

Cherylville Slew(Evansville Slew-Slew City Slew)

Wolfwithintegrity(Mr. Integrity-Mr. Prospector and out of a Nijinsky II daughter)

Northern Summer(Northern Park-Northern Dancer)

The next 3 are all out of a mare called Angel Puss by Wolf Power

U S S Tinosa(Foxhound-Danzig)
Hackendiffy(Willowy Ambassador-an Unraced son of Deputy Minister)
Lendell Ray(Regal Affair-His Majesty)

I also notice that this mare was oriented to routes which surprises me somewhat due to the fact that her dam had to be one of the most hard knocking sprinters to never even place in a stakes race.113 starts-24 wins-20 seconds and 12 3rds earning $379,000

I would look at horses like Desert Warrior,Freud,Wiseman's Ferry or Tomorrow's Cat-I have had 2 of Desert Warrior's 1/2 brothers(Battle Cry-had to be destroyed his 1st season at stud and Indian Territory whose 1st crop hit the ground this year).Desrt Warrior was much better than his record indicates-he had the death of Lukas training him and as most of Overbrooks raised horses they either cut it a s Grade 1's or can em' as soon as you can-he went from maiden to Grade 3 to allowance to grade 2-Lukas pingponged him from sprinting to routes and the horse never really had a chance and you can't complain about the bottom side of his pedigree.

Freud is interesting in the fact that he is out of a daughter of Rahy(who has also sired a SW out of a Wolf Power daughter)

Wiseman's Ferry is interesting as he has 2 crosses of Northern Dancer in his pedigree and he also has a very nice pedigree on the bottom side as Sky Mesa and Bernstein are under the 2nd dam

Tomorrow's cat also has 2 crosses of Northern Dancer

If this mare was a clients mare I would advise Wiseman's Ferry,Desert Warrior,Tomorrow's Cat and Freud in that order

You have a nice mare that I think can be a very nice producer for you-she's not all flowery but there is some honest hard knocking racehorses in her pedigree-Crusader Sword is a nice cross on this mare as he is out of a daughter of Nijinsky II which matches the pattern somewhat of the above mentioned Stakes Winners out of Wolf Power daughters.

Good luck-JC

I must have had a brain fart on the Silver Nithi SW-Numerous's 2nd dam is the dam of Nureyev-not Sadler's Wells
