Pedigree Query

I wish to breed my mare "Exclusive Pass" to "Tinners Way" in 2006...what do you people think about that ??.Any additional suggestions for a better breeding ??...Would if I could but cannot spend over $15000. Hi, stcath. It depends on what you're breeding for. The close inbreeding of Secretariat would be more likely to be useful in a broodmare than in a racehorse. Many good broodmares are inbred to quality individuals, but often the inbreeding doesn't show up in the racing quality in its own generation.

Your mare is an ordinary mare from an ordinary family. She might be a good mare for producing a sport-horse, but there is little commercial appeal for a racing prospect, as there are no close family stakes horses or big names. And her chances of producing quality racehorses is slim. $1500 stud fee would be the max I would consider for her.

If you are wanting to produce a commercial foal, you'll need a better catalog page with lots of bold type (called black type). It signifies stakes-winning and stakes-placed horses. And the stallion would have to have some "buzz" about him as a quality producer or be highly publicized. Tinners Way is neither. He was a very good racehorse that has not reproduced himself, and his foals are not commercial.

On the other hand, if you want to produce a quality horse for breed-to-race, consider purchasing a pregnant mare who is a proven producer and breed to a stallion who puts out high quality runners and doesn't cost a lot. There are quite a few such horses in KY and surrounding states, and be sure to qualify for state-bred premiums.

Sorry for the harsh response, but money-wasting is a common pasttime in this business.

So I understand --your saying I should hope for a filly out of Exclusive Pass by Tinners Way for breeding down the line... instead of a colt ?...I certainly agree...BUT..I'll take the colt first only because I am thinking that way and hope for a second birth of a filly...in 2008..I will be breeding in Feb 2006...then a possible 2nd breeding in March 2007...any othr stallion suggestions for better breeding...I know nothing.!!!..I am honestly asking for truthful and improving breeding possibilities to get the most and not be blind-sighted by my lack of knowledge and reasoning. I do intend to race down the line (2010-2011) and do intend to breed down the line...I currently have a 5 month old filly out of Exclusive Pass by Deodar (SW)..I intend to race in 2007...Thanks for you input....Would like to hear more from others also...feedback would be appreciated !!...Thanks

A Blade daughter combined with Cherokee Run to get the very good horse During(see him at http://www.claibornefarm.com), so you might look at Under David's Wing also at Key Ranch who is by Cherokee Run's sire Runaway Groom.

Here is an example of the kind of mare to look for: Hip #4063 at Keeneland November. She is older, but has a few more years left--and every foal a runner, all but one a winner (and that one is only a juvenile). Her worst foal was a winner who earned $25,000 and her best foals were all $100k plus.

Older, proven mares like the one above are available and usually get ignored by the market because of their age. A mare in the 15-18 range will have a few good years left, and can get you viable sales prospects. When the FT Texas Fall Mixed catalogue comes online, you can check that for good deals.

Another older mare would be Come on Joy who sold at Keeneland for $1500. I bought her a month later at the Thomas sale in Tulsa for $3000. My wife became more forgiving after her daughter R Lady Joy won the Delaware Oaks.
