I finally have a broodmare! Now what...

Postby vaponydoc » Fri Nov 25, 2005 12:52 am

After a long search I have a lovely new mare in my herd.

I would like to get some initial opinions on stallions. I will be breeding to race and I'm not planning to breed her until 2007.

She is a BIG, solid mare named Broken Valentine (she's in the database.) A daughter of Pulpit, she really looks like her daddy. She was unraced due to an injury as a weanling. Overall, I like the way she is put together although she's a little heavy for my taste and she is perched on tiny little feet. She also has some mild hock effusion and flexes a little off on her hocks.

Aside from bloodlines, important factors for me in the stallion will be someone who passes on a nice temperment (or at least doesn't throw alot of screwballs) and someone with super legs and feet.

I am in VA about 6 hrs from Lexington, KY and 6 hrs. from most MD farms -- would like to stay in that radius.

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks!

Congratulations on your new mare!

Since you brought up her feet, I just wanted to mention that a more than a few of the Pulpits I've seen have club feet, as does his full sister (who sold at Keeneland last year.) It's just something to keep in mind when you're planning matings for your mare.

I don't know how he'd fit regarding temperament, but Devil His Due looks like a nice fit for both pedigree and soundness. Some solid line breeding here to a number of good horses, which to my mind more than offsets any soundness issues raised by a 4x5 Raise a Native cross.

Pulpit is obviously pretty young for a broodmare sire but FWIW, A P Indy has done the best with Fappiano line stallions. I guess you'd have to determine for yourself if that is too much Mr Prospector for you. The other SWs are by Saint Ballado, Dixieland Band and Touch Gold. Based on your mare's family, a Deputy Minister stallion might be something to consider or Roberto sireline if available.

hi Vaponydoc

Here are a couple of thoughts (for starters) re: a stallion for your Pulpit mare (Broken Valentine).

Let's start with Eddington. He is an Unbridled out of a Chief's Crown. G1 winner Tapit (by Pulpit) is out of an Unbridled mare and G1 winner A.P. Adventure (by A.P. Indy) is out of a Fappiano (the sire of Unbridled). Champion Mineshaft and G1 winner Tomisue's Delight are each out of a Mr Prospector (grandsire of Unbridled). Eddington is out of a Chief's Crown (by Danzig) mare and seems like (at a quick glance anyway) a potentially excellent mate for your Pulpit mare. Consider this...Northern Dancer-line daughters have produced numerous stakes-winners when bred to Pulpit. G1 winner Sky Mesa (by Pulpit) is out of a Storm Cat...graded stakes winner Lydgate (by Pulpit) is out of a Danzig...and G1 placed (and approx $1.6mil yearling) Reach For The Moon (by Pulpit) is out of a Chief's Crown.

Another thought...recognizing that when Pulpit was bred to a daughter of Storm Cat that was out of an Affirmed mare...the resiult was G1 winner Sky Mesa...we might take that Pulpit, Storm Cat, Affirmed connection one step further...and consider Harlan's Holiday for your Pulpit mare? Harlan's Holiday is by a son of Storm Cat and out of an Affirmed daughter. You'd be inbreeding to Honest Pleasure, the broodmare sire of HH's second dam and also the broodmare sire of Pulpit's 2nd dam...certainly a consideration, hopefully not an obstacle.

Since Forty Niner has worked so well with A.P. Indy (in the case of recent graded stakes-winner Indian Vale), possibly Ecton Park (by Forty Niner out of a Danzig mare) is worth a look. Certainly Danzig has had a degree of success with Pulpit, and A.P. Indy has now had a very good result with Forty Niner.

Sunday Break (Jpn) might also make some sense. He is a Forty Niner out of a Storm Cat...and we already know that Pulpit when bred to a Storm Cat produced G1 winner Sky Mesa (who is a grand looking horse)...and when A.P. Indy (sire of Pulpit) was bred to a Forty Niner a result was the graded stakes-winning filly Indian Vale...hmmm.

A relatively inexpensive stallion possibly worthy of consideration for your Pulpit mare is undefeated Cactus Ridge. He is a son of Hennessy (by Storm Cat), the sire of Johannesburg...and out of a dam by a Mr Prospector son...furthermore, CR's second dam is by Danzig (a sire who we know has had success with Pulpit). You will note that champion Johannesburg (by Hennessy) is from Pulpit's family...interesting (the way I see it).

Certainly there are many other choices...but I thought this is an interesting little group for starters...they're all in Ky...and stud fees range from approx $6,500 to $20,000.

Respectfully

Thanks so much for the ideas. Interestingly, Val had previously been bred to Ecton Park, one of FOS' suggestions, and slipped.

Many stallions suggested would produce an offspring with inbreeding to Mr. P -- not sure how I feel about that...

Many thanks for the ideas, though -- I'll be checking out BRIS reports and hypo matings til spring!

Have you seen Country Only? He is standing at Naylee Farm, WVat a reasonable fee. He out of Carson City/Only Maisie by Stalwart. Tray hypomating.

Nice mare! Love her pedigree. You should have a variety of great options with her, but personally...

I like Broken Valentine with Maria's Mon. There is evidence that the Irish Castle in her distaff pedigree could be a good nick with with Majestic Light in Maria's Mon's tail male line. Also, you'd have 6 crosses to La Troienne in ten generations, through 3 individuals, a male and two females. With the added benefit of multiple crosses to Mumtaz Begum and Nogara through males and females, the hypo represents a relatively high percentage of linebreeding to outstanding female producers. In addition, you'd have Bold Ruler linebreeding through four outstanding males: Boldnesian, Secretariat, What A Pleasure and Irish Castle.

Monarchos would be a consideration for the same reasons above with the added elements of Dixieland Band and Roberto genetics, but I personally don't feel the balance is nearly as good in this hypomating as it is with his sire.

Assumig that Pulpit produced very well with a mare by Danzig (Pit Fighter), you may try a similar cross of your mare to a son of Danzig.
I suggest the iron horse Lost Soldier, standing in KY, with the hope to correct in the offspring the legs and feet of the mare.

Laurie and "SemparQuel" --

Thanks for the input! Maria's Mon is out of my price range, but Monarchos is perhaps a possibility... I love that horse and think the addition of Roberto might be desirable. Val's dam's best foal is by Red Ransom.

Laurie, I wonder where you have dug up info on potential good crosses with Irish Tower?

I am thinking about trying to visit a few boys if I can get out to KY in January.

I was thinking of looking at Broken Vow (by Unbridled) who is at Pin Oak with Maria's Mon.

I was also considering going to Buckpond to see Lost Soldier and Kissin Kris --

Any thoughts on any other "must see" guys?

Thanks!
