Pedigree comments on this mare, please

Postby Codysmom55 » Wed Jan 11, 2006 5:43 pm

I have been lurking on this forum for sometime and appreciate all the knowledge that everyone is so willing to share.

I have a very good friend that has a 13 yr. old (this year) mare by the name of Knowhowtodoit. My friend has plans to cross this mare with a son of Valid Appeal by the name of Valid Bidder.

Could I get some of you pedigree gurus to give me your opinions and/or comments on this mare and the cross with this stallion?

Thank you very much!

Hi Codysmom,

On paper there's nothing wrong with the mating, and outcross through 4 generations. If Valid Bid's full brother, Valid Wager's a guide, then there are affinities with Bold Ruler and Ribot line.

The only caveat that I'd add is that Valid Bidder wasn't well sold ($35k vs stallion average of $116k) so I'd make sure that his conformational faults are acceptable and especially not duplicating any in the mare.

If the foal is to be sold, I don't think there's any commercial muscle. If it's to race, best of luck.

Regards,

Pete

Hi Pete,

Thank you so much for responding to my request and for your valuable comments. The foal from this mating is not pointed for sales, but for racing.

Could you please tell me what you think of the mare? She appears to have some decent bloodlines, but as to a more educated analysis, I am out of my depths here.

Hi Codysmom,

Commercially there's not much value in your mare but as a breed to race mare Knowhowtodoit is a decent prospect. All in all I like your selection of stallion because the In Reality line through Valid Appeal gets a solid percentage of useful race horses.

The resulting foal will be very much an outcross and I prefer this to being cute on paper and reducing my chances for a runner.

The first 6 foals of Knowhowtodoit's 1st dam are winners, some very useful and none with fashionable sires. Knowhowtodoit earned alost $57k the hard way and hopefully her soundness will be passed on. She and all her siblings have been exclusively sprinters (just to note it).

Where do you intend to race the foal?

Pete

Hi Pete,

I really appreciate your taking the time to respond to my request and to provide me with such an in depth opinion.
To my knowledge, Knowhowtodoit retired sound and your observation that she earned $57K the hard way backs up my friend's description of this mare.
I like Valid Appeal and of course, Bold Ruler. However, I am totally uneducated as to how those lines might fit and I thank you for enlightening me on that part of it.

The resulting foal of this mating will more than likely run in Louisiana.

Have a wonderful day and thanks again!

Hi Pete,

Hope you read this. I passed your opinion of Knowhowtodoit on to her owner and she wanted me to tell you that if this mare settles and has a colt, she is going to submit the name "Pete's Prospect" for consideration in your honor.

Thanks again!
