Anna's Love

Postby Dormello » Sat Jan 14, 2006 11:21 pm

This mare was just retired (bowed twice) and I was wondering about a stud for her. 4 crosses to La troienne and a line to her sister Adargatis. She has no Mr. P or ND, so would a stallion with these lines be a given. Is she worth going to Mojave Moon or Louis Quatorze? I would prefer to stay in The Mid-Atlantic with my stallion choice. She is a large, big boned mare, about 16.2, so-so in the knees, was told her mother was a nut by the person who galloped her (galloped them both), but Anna seems pretty mellow. Any suggestions?

not sure everyone would agree with this pick, but I like Fred Astaire for your mare. If you could somehow manage to have a VA foal they have incentives if your horse would win in any state. Maybe someone who has a VA foal could explain the rules better. I have only read a little bit on their website.

How much are you willing to spend? Black Tie Affair in WV is totally proven, works with a wide variety of family lines, and gets nearly 90% runners/65% winners from foals. $7500 at O'Sullivan Farms, and the foal would be eligible for WV-bred bonuses. Also at O'Sullivan is Prized, who is another totally proven sire of hard-knocking check-earners.

In Pennsylvania, where a PA-bred gets great bonuses, check out Duckhorn. He is young and unproven, and his pedigree would be a near-total outcross, but he could have a lot to offer.

Thanks for the replies. The breeding with Fred Astaire is interesting. I actually have a friend with a stud named Precious Marque who I looked at, by Marquetry, with lines to Nijinsky, Tom Fool & Prince John, like Fred. He stands in Md, but they have a farm in VA, too, so they offer MD or VA breds. And he is a gorgeous boy. I really would like to scrape the money together and go to Louis Quatorze (Proven race & sire record, inbreeding to Grey Flight & Adargatis), but I think it will be out of my reach. Mojave Moon seems to be a perfect match on paper too. They all fit her conformationally as well. Do I mortgage the house? The Pa-bred money is a plus, but I'm still not sure. I would like to stay in the stud fee range of $3500 or less.

If breeding to race in MD is your goal, have a peek at Meadow Monster.

The mating would be fairly outcrossed, with 4x5 Nearctic and 5x5 Prince John (through Silent Screen and Hold Your Peace). He is also well proven, and occasionally gets a good one. $4000.
