Need advice please
I claimed a mare and ran her back and she won but came back bad, had no leg issues going into the race. Must of happened on the sloppy track..My question is, would she make a good broodmare?....Her name is Cloud Surfer. She is nice and big and has good confirmation. If I decide to keep her, who would she match up good with ,my budget would be up to 15,000 or should I just sell her?
You would be the best judge of whether or not she is worth the investment to breed.. in glancing at her pedigree it might be calling out for some In Reality. If you are breeding to race, and you like the mare, and you find a suitable stallion, then you have your answer. This mare would not have much in the way of commercial appeal as a broodmare. Her damline lacks any stakes winners for three generations, pretty much a killer.

I think Honour and Glory would be overbreeding this mare. The horse like Honour and Glory that I like better for a breed to race is Bright Launch. He hasn't much on the ground, but his best so far has a pedigree with similarities to 30west's mare. However, 30west, since you are new to breeding there are some things to consider.
Which state are you located in? Will you primarily be racing within that state's breeder's award area? If so you may be looking for a recommendation to a state-registered stallion, so it would help us help you if we knew that.
Next, before you sign on the dotted line, it might be best to examine the conformation of the stallion you are paying to send your mare to.
Colonel might be on the right track with a Relaunch stallion.. that is a good source of In Reality to balance all the Buckpasser in your mare, I believe.

I will be racing in the West Virginia state-bred program. If I bred to out of state stallion, and foal in west virginia to be eligable I must breed back to a West Virginia stallion, so I would be more than willing to send her out of state. The mare was made to be a runner, running brisnet numbers 92 and 99...if I can get a foal thats as good as her I would be happy! Great advice so far Thanks.
Hi 30west,
Tough Luck with your mare.Your description above sounds exactly like what happened with me in 2004.It appears your mare had some serious talent.I also see she had a half that seemed nice as well. While she might not have the most fasionable pedigree, who cares!Shes your mare and you said you are going to foal her out in WV and i dont think the mares there are any different than yours and at least yours had heart!I have just finished researching pedigrees of all the mares in the Kee sale and i have seen some of the most regally bred mares throw nothing but cheap junk being bred to the best studs in NA.One trend im starting to see is that the average bred mares that ran with heart are throwing useful horses being bred to average stallions.Whats your goals? Most of the high end breeders are trying to breed the big horse to win a Derby or in the Breeders Cup.If my mare happens to throw runners that pay for theselves i will be happier than a pig in mud.I am in no position to give you a reccomendation on who to breed her to,but i think you have a good starting block,a mare with heart!
Good Luck

30west, here is a curiousity. Your mare's dam threw a "bigger" horse sired by Not For Love, indicating an affinity for a return of Raise a Native.. but with the Majestic Light and Buckpasser, you do want to pull In Reality. I found a stallion in the WV program named Medford, standing for $1,000... you might want to physically look at him. He entered stud in 2003, so should have horses on the track now.. you might ask about them. He is in the stallion register.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....
