what are some thoughts on this mare as being a productive broodmare for a regional program?

has produced 1 SP colt
i realize she is a bit aged though and probabl would only get a couple more foals from her

Now that's a girl born for the grass!! If turf racing is your thing, you could try her with a grass line (Roberto, Kris S, etc.). Big Spruce is known as an excellent broodmare sire for sporthorse and steeplechase types.

Sticks on breeding for a turf runner. If she was located in my country I would take her to a german top producer, Lando , Monsun etc

brooke--look at the pedigrees of Afleet Alex, Funny Cide and Smarty Jones. All 3 were foaled out of mares that were bred to go long on the turf. The sires in each case were 7f-1 Mile sprint specialists. I would recommend you consider breeding to a stallion similar to Elusive Quality, Distorted Humor or Northern Afleet. If you would like some recommendations from me please tell me the states you prefer and the price range you are looking for and I will see if there is anything that I might recommend. You can always start with a representative son of one of the above sires as a place to start. (Unforgettable Max) as an example. Hope that helps.

Warning: this fits in the "odd" and "experimental" category.

TURNOFTHECENTURY at Justaplain Farm in PA.

The good: He was a Gr-2 winning turf runner, with a damline that strongly says "grass" (via Nijinsky and Tom Rolfe). A similar mating to that of Turnofthecentury's damline produced the chef-de-race Niniski, whose son covered a mare with 2nd BMS Big Spruce and got the top-notch international turf runner Silvano (GER).

The odd: Normally, Holy Bull has been a bad cross on Bold Ruler, and it is too early to see if any of his sons will buck that trend. But Tyrant, for whatever reason, is perhaps the only Bold Ruler strain with whom Holy Bull has crossed well (e.g. G1 Giacomo, G3 Holywood picture).

The experimental: Linebreeding to Herbager via Big Spruce and Grey Dawn. It has been tried only a few times that I know of, and not with much success either time. One Big Spruce mare was sent to Fly Till Dawn twice, with one minor moneyearner and one unknown. Grey Dawn's best US sons Vigors and Swing Till Dawn all wanted a long stretch of lawn, and so that might pull out some big-time stamina.
