Hello all:)
I have decided to breed one of my mares this year, and would like to know what some of the more seasoned people on this board thought.
First off, I am located in the mid-Atlantic, near Charles Town, WV, and I would like to stay local (within a 3 hour trip). Second, I have a $7,500 stud fee budget. Now to the mare...
Replete (1991) is by Rollicking out of Foppish by Mitey Prince, and is a solidly built 16.2 hands with very correct conformation. She is unraced (full sister to stakes winner), and is the dam of two unraced colts. Both colts are 16+ hands, very attractive, and the one that I still own (2000 colt by Compelling Sound) is a promising show horse. I am looking to breed to race, but would like to find a stallion who can get me a racehorse and still be commercial.
What are your thoughts on Real Quiet or Go For Gin as a sires? Has anyone seen any of their offspring? What are they like?
Any advice is appreciated.

Oh, what a nice mare you have--a sister to Grand Rol. I am no expert (there are others with much greater knowledge than I on this board), but in looking at Rollicking's progency who had 6 figure earnings and high numbers of starts (soundness), there are definitely high quality ancestors who repeatedly show up. Many of these high dollar earners had dams who brought in Bold Ruler, Princequillo, Hyperion, Ribot, Turn To and Nasrullah (other than Bold Ruler). Also saw some repeats of Citation and Count Fleet which you don't see too often anymore.
Perhaps Louis Quatorze merits a look? He brings in many of the above mentioned horses and is a grand looking horse capable of getting you a nice stakes horse.
I would imagine that Go for Gin could definitely get you a racehorse, though I do not know how commercial the foal would be as it could be later maturing. I do like his line though...
Many others have questioned Real Quiet's ability to throw a correct foal. I think with him you would really need to know how he matched with your mare and then think about it again after looking at some of his get.
Another thought is Lils Lad. Since he has moved to PA, I have wondered how he'd cross with a Rollicking mare giving a second cross to Rambunctious, as well as Turn To, Count Fleet, Nasrullah. The breeders awards in PA might make it interesting.
My other favorite is Waquoit in your price range. Though he probably will not fit the commercial designation, he probably will get you a racehorse.
Best of luck with your search! Will you please share with us what you decide?

I'm partial to Siphon myself. And the right one will definitely sell.

Rollickings have lots of speed
Rollicking threw lots of speed and Siphon appears to throw lots of speed. I have a Siphon mare named White Wedding who broke on top almost everytime she left the gate. Siphon does offer value for the money and he does sire the big horse but you have to look at him overall. He was bred to some very good mares as was Real Quiet. Another horse I would look at would be Gators N Bears who stand at Maryland Stallion Station. He has a nice race record for a $5,000 Stud fee. Another nice runner with a nice pedigree is Bowman's Band who is from a very strong female family of Pollard's Vison,Sightseek, Tate's Creek, Chief's Crown, and Winning Colors. He is a full brother to the dam of Pollard's Vision who is standing for $10,000 in Kentucky. Bowman's Band is standing for $6,000. Prized offers value at $3500. There are alot better stallions standing in that area especially in West Virginia and Pennsylvania then when I was growing up in Charles Town. I grew up with the likes of Shy Native, Cortan, Aye's Turn, Super Smile and so on standing in West Virginia. Of course there was Northern Dancer in Maryland. I remember West Virginia breds Heartlight No. One, Afternoon Deelites, and Soul of the Matter who all came from the same mare lines being by affordable stallions Talc, and Private Terms. Good luck in whoever you chose.

You may want to consider a Stallion standing in New Jersey because the foal would be eligible to race as a NJ bred and what ever other state you chose to foal the mare in, West Va, as an example.
The NJ bred program is exceptional. Small foal crops each year, restricted racing for NJ breds only, MSW starts at 48K and the allowance races are in the 50K range, NJ also has a very attractive stakes program for NJ breds. When you factor in the Restricted races, the substantial purses, the fact that your foal can be eligible to race with dual state registry, looking for a stallion in NJ is a very attractive option.
I happen to stand some nice stallions, one is Rockin on Ready-- a son of Smoke Glacken. Another stallion I stand is Honor Defend, a son of Woodman. If you are interested in other stallions that stand in NJ I can help you find the farms and stallions that stand in NJ for 2006. It is a fantastic program that few people are aware of and you can really put your foal in a position to make a substantial amount of money in restricted races. If you would like to know more about the NJ bred program you can go to the state bred website or send me an email and I will be glad to tell you more about it. It's a great program and one that you should make sure you know about. I would be glad to help you even if you want to breed to another stallion in the state, so don't hesitate to check it out further.

bcassidy..... you make great points, but there are some potential drawbacks as well. Short racing season....sprint,sprint,sprint.....questions on the future supplements from A.C. after the intial agreement runs out.
By the way, I saw R on R race quite a few times.Nice precocious speed which should fit Monmouth well. Did Henry Carroll breed him?
I have a small racing operation at Monmouth in the summer.Primarily claimers.Peter Walder trains for me. Absolutely love the sport...would love to meet you sometime.

monmouth matt, yes henry carrol did breed R on R and he still owns the broodmare from what I know. A gentleman by the name of Don Speckman now owns him. He should fit the NJ breeding program very well.
Even though the season is now shorter here in NJ, you can still consider it a bonus to the state bred program where you ultimately foal the mare, Pa, NY, WV, Maryland, etc. Dual state registry is a beautiful thing and the only potential drawback is you have to like/breed to a stallion standing in NJ to get the dual state qualification. If you happen to like one of the NJ stallions then it is a no-brainer and you would be hard pressed not to take advantage of it.
As to your second comment, yes I would like to meet you one day as well. Maybe we can meet at Monmouth Park for some racing action! If you would ever like to see R on R or Honor Defend or our farm feel free to stop on over. I am about 45 mins west of MP near exit 7 on the NJ turnpike. I love this sport also.

Take a look at Civilisation [Gone West X Toussaud]. He stands at NayLee which means you could probably ride your mare to the farm.
Civilisation is Toussaud's only foal of racing age not to win a stakes race but he lost an eye while in training to correct a gate problem. Get to him now as I fear he'll probably move to Kentucky next year after his first foals race later this year.
Also take a look at Emancipator [Forty Niner X Coutradance by Danzig] . He has short legs but I got a leggy filly out of him last year with an A++ WERK. And you did say your mare was tall. He is gentically a 3/4 brother to Distorted Humor who is red hot right now. Also has a nice web site at:
www.emancipator.net
That's dot net not dot com.

Almost forgot, Black Tie Affaire stood in WV last year for $7,500 . Some really nice people broght him home from Japan and he's aproven stallion with 5 or 6 millionaires and more stakes winners thant most stallions now standing,
He's 20 plus but wasooking great when I saw him a kittle over a year ago. Here's a stallion that has a stakes race named after him
Lastly don't under estimate the value of having a WVBRED

Just visited O'Sullivans
Hi, we visited O'Sullivans on Friday. I have a Black Tie Affair mare and was so pleased to see how great he looks and how many mares he is still getting in foal. He is also the leading Broadmare sire. They have several really nice stallions there - Prized, Bop, Inner Harbour to mention a few. I mention them because I am only looking at sturdy race records. PA also has some very nice stallions in Patton, Real Quiet, Siphon, Banker's Gold, they all fit your price range. Both of the farms will help with how your mare matches. O'Sullivan in WV and Regal Heir in PA. Good Luck!
Horses are pure love.

If you are looking at Siphon that conformation picture on the page is terrible. Look at the video and I have some of him in the pasture at Airdrie (under Airdrie) in my webshots album: htpp://community.webshots.com/user/summerhorse
Every mighty oak was once an acorn that stood its ground.
Suggest you also check out the stallions at John Casey's Taylor Mountain farm. he has a very nice horses including a Meadow Lake son out of a dam that goes to ND.
Also NayLee has some stakes producing stallions in additional to Civilisation [Gone West X Toussaud] .
