Mating Ideas needed

Postby Ryeno » Sat Feb 04, 2006 12:56 pm

Hey Crew,

Its that time of year again lol.An oldtimer im stabled beside has asked me to help him with his stallion selections for the upcoming breeding season with his two mares. He is breeding to race and i would say only one of them is probably worth breeding but its his money. He wants to stay in the Pacific Northwest, preferably in BC and I know most of the pedigree gurus dont know many of the stallions up here but was more wondering on what lines would match up with both these girls.

The first mare who is one I quite like is Famous Spirit.Im not sure on her exact earnings but she is stakes placed here at Hastings and was a nice mare. She isnt very, big but is well built. She is by a local stallion named Alfaair who is by Danzig.

The second mare is named Pacific Beauty and I am unsure of her race record and I know she has one foal to race that couldnt out run a fat man in gumboots. She is by a local stallion named Taylor who pretty much did nothing in the shed.He was a nice runner though.I have no idea on her conformation. She is free of ND though.

So if anyone has the time to take a gander I would really appreciate it.He is a great guy and I would love to see him get a nice runner or two out of his mares.

Regards,
Ryeno

Pacific Beauty.......I like The Ladys Groom.

Famous Spirit......I like Katahaula County, Silver Fox, and I like Orchid Devils pedigree but would want to know why he was unraced.

just some ideas looking at paper only.

These two mares are related. (Cousins) Pacific Beauty is the better of the two, on paper, IMO. (Better SSI) Per her charts she could sprint or route. (I also like versatility in a horse over one that only has one way to go.) I would look to add some speed to her with a stallion that offered speed and a solid female family (class). With a little upgrading, these mares just might surprise!

With the other filly, Famous Spirit, I look to add some classicity. But your friend may prefer to breed for a good sprinter.

Perhaps you could post a link or two to good Canadian Stallion Directory sites. Or, Bill in WA, should be able to give excellent thoughts on Washington sires. These mares have not done bad considering their modest lines. I wouldn't sell them short. (But I'm ever the optimist.) I'd really look to upgrade them and improve on what they've already shown so far.

Thanks ragsdaj!

Famous Spirit is currently in foal to Orchids Devil.IMO I think Orchids Devil is a very well bred horse and he has thrown some runners but they tend to be very brittle. In my own research i thought (which means not alot  ) that Famous Spirit would be a good match with Western Trick. What do you think?

Also, just to learn, why do you feel the Lady's Groom would be a good match for Pacific Beauty?Just curious.

Thanks Again

I chose the Ladys Groom based on your comments concerning the mare, not the BJs comments, though I would be even more encourage with the pairing based on the info he provided. I like the Top line of Ladys Groom al the way back to Nasrullah. Seems that no matter what mare the line is bred to the progeny colt was successful (just this pedigree only).
Add the fact he did well enough on the track and add BJ's comment that pacific is the better of the two, you might get a winner.

Western Trick looked o.k. but on paper I still like the choices I made. If everything else were equal (in my mind) and it came down to two horses, I would choose the sire with the most money, shallow as that is.
