Mating Advice... two mares... two stallions

Postby adrienne » Thu Mar 16, 2006 3:17 pm

I have two young mares that need to be bred to our two-on property stallions. Neither of the mares nor neither of the stallions having huge conformational issues I would be worried about. So I'm looking towards you all to give me some advice as far as pedigree compadibility.

Mare #1: Pirouette Action, grey filly. http://www.pedigreequery.com/pirouette+action

She was a speed demon. She broke a seasmoid.

Mare #2: Splash Limit , bay filly.

She was the only good thing her dam produced but she was very very very fast. She was by far the best of the 2 year old crop last year. Carpal fracture, as luck goes, during her first start. She is also wonderfully put together.

Stallion #1: Sabona

Stallion #2: Tough Call
http://www.pedigreequery.com/tough+call

I think as far as physical compatibility, Pirouette Action works best with Tough Call, but otherwise, I have no strong feelings. Tough Call tends to put legs on his babies, they tend to be 'racey', Sabona tends to put bulk on his babies, they tend to be slower-maturing types.

Sabona is obviously the better stallion as far as what he has produced, but he did get better opportunities than Tough Call. Also, he is 24 this year and I don't want to think I can cover everything on the farm with him :) We're not going to pull a Coolmore on him :) We are favoring the stakes producing mares with him, but I will happily breed a maiden to him if it works out well.

Thanks in advance,

~Adrienne

Breed to sell,race or sporthorse?
The young stud has a very good female-tail line 1X.
The old stud has Raise A Native an so do the two mares.
I'd go with the young stud myself.
I'm not a inbreed or line breed to Raise A Native fan.
Some have done it an got the Gold.
Good Luck.

I love Sabona (which you already know), but this case is really quite confusing. My first inclination would be Sabona for both because he was a very sound horse and both these fillies were lightly raced due to injury, but you are going to get up close inbreeding to Exclusive Native (2x5) and thats not something I'd be particularly fond of. Tough Call on the otherhand only made 8 starts (if my memory is working which is rarely does) and thats sort of a concern for me if I'm breeding mares who are lightly race due to injury. Hmmm.... I might still consider going to the old man just because you know he's a really sound horse who can produce a runner. And he's purdy
