Suggestions for Joyous Road

Postby aurora » Fri Apr 07, 2006 1:37 pm

I just got this mare & she is supposed to be 3 weeks away from foaling. She sure doesn't look preg & I will have her checked tomorrow a.m. I need to hustle her off to a breeding shed and my regional choices are KY, FL, or NM. I like True Direction, Explicit, Devon Lane. Who do you like for 5K or under? She is 16+ hands, correct, elegant.

there are a lot of nice new stallions at $5K and under but personally I'd prefer at that price to go to someone proven. Of course it all depends on your mare's conformation and pedigree but in KY I like Evansville Slew (6% SWs, 58% str, 44% wnrs), Dayjur (not quite as good numbers but OK), David Copperfield, Hap, and Explicit. I didn't look at anything under $1,000, how good could they be? He's more than $5K but Slew City Slew is a fantastic value if you breed to race.

If you are breeding to sell the buyers DO seem to prefer the new untested stallions for some bizarre reason.

In NM? I wouldn't breed to any of them unless I planned to keep and race the foal strictly in NM for breeder's awards or something. the good ones Favorite Trick and KO Punch are well below even the mediocre stallions in that price range in FL or KY.

In FL there are MANY new stallions in that price range, almost all look and sound nice, like Indian Ocean the best but there are quite a few who look like good prospects but of course it's just a guess how they will turn out. There are hardly any stallions in that price range with runners, of them Concordes tune has the best stats (6% SWs, 70% starters, 55% winners.

Devon Lane was the only reason I listed NM. Can't decide, can't decide...

before I would spend 5k for a stallion, i'd pay Bill fromWA to pick a few a stallions that make a good match for her .
As much as fuel cost it would pay for its self alone.

Sweetsouthernsaint is a nice horse

Sweetsouthernsaint is a nice horse but like your mare he has lots of Olympia on the bottom side. Another horse I would consider for your would be Indian Ocean. Kennedy Road is the broodmare sire of Grade II winner Rare Charmer. Another horse I would seriously consider would be Slew City Slew. You may consider a son of Seattle Slew or A.P. Indy for your mare.

Mare checked in foal on a late cover so I'll skip her this year and get an early start for next year.
