You are probably thinking about Buckpasser. I don't think there many Bold Ruler over Buckpasser mare tha went on to be stakes winners alhough it was tried multiple times.

Maybe that was it , it was an unmitigated failure that defied all the stats.

I believe I've read there was never a stakes winner come from Northern Dancer crossed with a Bold Ruler mare. I might be wrong, as the older I get, my memory seems to fade dimmer and dimmer. It was either a stakes winner or maybe a graded stakes winner.

I think that's the one I was thinking of, two of the most succesful sires of their time and together they where completely useless, fuel for the nick people.
Thanks

Bold Ruler crossed with mares by Princequillo (Prince Rose) sire line.
Secretariat, Bold Ruler---Somethingroyal, byPrincequillo was a beneficary of this cross.

Buckpasser and Bold Ruler produced a much smaller group of good horses and a larger group of horses that couldn't withstand training. The theory was Bold Ruler was prone to pass on arthritis and Buckpasser passed on knee issues. The two combined made for soundness issues in a high percentage of cases.
