Mating advice needed!!!

Postby JaradM » Sun May 07, 2006 11:38 am

I am thinking about picking up a broodmare (Miss Lucky Mertz) with a buddy of mine to ethier breed and sell the yearling or possibly race the yearling. She is being offered by a friend of ours for a very good price. If we do decide to pick her up my top choices for Louisiana Studs are:

Storm Day
Leestown

Looking for some advice or ideas from some of the experts on this forum. I am new to breeding but not new to racing in general. What would be your top choices??

JaradM,

Before getting to the nitty-gritty of your question can you talk a little about your new friend, Miss Mertz. Is it her pedigree that you like, maybe the foals she has on the ground now have potential, or maybe she really looks the part of a race horse? Would like your perspective.

Second, Leestown will have another million dollar progeny season. Storm Day looks to be new. Why have you chosen these two already (not being critical just nosey).

Thanks.

Miss Lucky Mertz is owned by a friend of mine. He just purchased three more mares at a recent sale and was willing to sell her to me to make some room at their barn. I am just getting started in the breeding business and figured for the price that she would be a good place to start. I watched one of her colts (Merts Finest) run the other night in a allowance race (ran 4th) and I liked what I saw. I will be heading back to the track Friday night to watch him run again to see if he improves on his last race.

The reason I like Leestown is becasue I believe he would add some much needed stamina. Miss Lucky Merts and Merts Finest are sprinters. He is also one of the hotest studs in LA right now.

The reason I like Storm Day is because he and Miss Lucky Mertz have a A -Nick. Not saying this would make my decision but I also like how the pedigree's match up.

Hope this helps.

I am standing a new stallion at Running R Ranch in Opelusas named MUSTANG JOCK. Go to the pedigree query and you will see his pedigree and picture. This year he is standing for $500. Everyone that sees him have booked to him. Nothing against the other stallion considerations but you can't beat the price. Next year we are raising his fee to $1500. He is absolutely gorgeous and very correct!!! Whatever you decide I wish you all the luck with your mare.

I like the Leestown choice for your mare. Like the linebreeding report numbers and all.

At some point I think the best mate in LA for her will be Afternoon Deelites. Good ped match and a nice stallion on the track and in the shed. Believe he was injured or had a reaction to a shot or something so not standing this moment. Old memory so I could be wrong.

Zarbyev gives you some nice influences also and he is hitting the charts for progeny earnings also.

Storm Day looks like a good candidate, but next year he should have some runners so you could get a feel for his progeny before investing.

Mustang Jock......Larrygene does an excellent job promoting his stallions. Never hurts to take a look.

Thanks for you opinion I really appreciate it.

larrygene, You would be happy to know that Miss Lucky Mertz was breed and is in foal to Mustang Jock. The current owner of the mare is from the same area. I am looking at prospects for next year. Also to let you know we are thinking about running the baby we get off of mustang jock if everything goes well.

I feel like my hands are tied behind my back, as I have no access to an American Produce Records CD. Can anyone update us on the female family and its strengths/weaknesses for Miss Lucky Mertz? What little info is available on the pedigree page would make me save my money for a more likely productive mare.

Remember, it will take you until at least 2010 before you get the result of next year's sire choice to the races, or 2009 to a yearling sale. SO MUCH MONEY and TIME goes into this breeding business, as well as potential complications of pregnancy.

Buy the best broodmare you can afford, even if you need to wait a year or two.

By the way, I much prefer the matchup of Leestown with Miss Lucky Mertz rather than Storm Day. But the mare is the suspect choice.

Thanks for all of your input.

I want to think this mare could produce some better runners by breeding to more quality studs than she has been breed to so far. None of them impress me to much.
