Hold That Tiger

Postby madelyn » Sun Apr 01, 2007 1:34 pm

A friend called me in tears this morning, her Hold That Tiger colt couldn't be revived and the mare was torn all to hell in a tough delivery. This is the second time for that farm, a different mare, that Hold That Tiger offspring were just SO BIG the mare ended up too damaged to rebreed this year. For a small commercial operation it is a disaster, and my friend said she is "done with Hold That Tiger." Does he have more than usual dystocias? Is there something in his pedigree? I thought it was the Mr. Prospector line stallions that were mare killers. Does anyone have any insight?

We sold a Hold That Tiger last Sept at Keeneland, he was out of a Montbrook mare. She is a good sized mare, 16.3h and fairly big-bodied. She didn't have any trouble and the colt wasn't especially big, smaller than a number of the other colts born around the same time. Hold That Tiger himself is not a very big horse, so I am unsure where the problem would have come from.

So sorry to hear about the trouble.....

Was it at Parrish Hill? I know someone who works there. I was a little scared because a few days later I had a mare that foaled a Hold that Tiger filly. She was big as well and got hip locked. But everything worked out ok and she was born within 30 minutes and mom is ok. I have been told that his offspring are huge. Tell your friend I feel for her and if it is the same farm my friend is extremely upset as well. I have been spreading the word as well I wouldn't want to bred to him. I would like some insight as well on him.

Is it possible that there are just so many of them that it increases the chance that his mares might have problems?
