Strodes Creek

Postby Roguelet » Wed Mar 02, 2005 9:10 am

Does anyone have any insight into this sire? I'm particularly interested in how he has fared as a broodmare sire, and what I can learn about his daughters in general.

Thanks in advance!

He's still a bit young (1991) to have much impact as a broodmare sire. His oldest foals arrived in 1997, and he's been in Japan since 2001. He comes from one heck of a family though, so he has the credentials to be a good broodie sire.

Thank you. I've become SO lazy on this forum, I almost never look anything up any more! I really must get out of that habit! I didn't realize Strodes Creek was that young. We just acquired a Strodes Creek mare and a friend of mine also has one... I guess I figured that if we both had one, they must be everywhere! Oh, well, it's been a long day...

Strodes Creek didn't have many foals before he went to Japan, so you have two of only about 50 daughters he sired here.

Strodes Creek belongs to Family A4 - the American version of English Family 21 - and one of our most prolific female dynasties. In the past one hundred years, four Kentucky Derby winners descended from this family starting with Clyde Van Deusen in 1929, Swaps, Iron Liege and Kauai King (although he's from a different branch than the other three). Strodes Creek could have been the fifth representative in the 1994 Derby but for Go For Gin being in his way.

Other active stallions from this family include leading UK stallion Green Desert, Bertolini, Twining, and Arch. Dubai Horse of the Year Festival of Light is unfortunately no longer active, and he had only one crop in Texas. Gulch is from a branch of this family.

Broodmare of the Year Courtly Dee belongs to this family, so does Chef-de-Race Creme dela Creme, and the classy race mares Cascapedia and Althea. The list of stakes winners produced from this family is long. As far as I'm concerned, the only thing better than having a mare sired by a member of the family is having one with direct tail-female descent.

What are the names of the Strodes Creek mares?

I have a mare from the A4 family, I was just going to ask what that was because all my other mares are in the Bruce Lowe families. Mine is not by Strodes Creek, she is by Dunstable out of a Botchery mare.

Wow, Linda... thank you for all of the information! How exciting! I thought this mare looked like she had some talent and it also seems that there was more talent in her immediate family, and I like how she matched up with Indy Mood. Now, I'm the first to admit that I'm not a pedigree guru or a mating specialist at all, but I thought it looked like a nice match. After reading your information, I must say I'm even more excited about the match! And, I had no idea she was a "rare commodity" of sorts!

She's on the schedule to be bred tomorrow... she's a maiden mare but if she stands anything like she's been teasing, we shouldn't have any problems at all!

The mare's name is McGuerty Creek. I don't know if my friend would want me to post the name of his mare or not, so I'd better ask him first. 8)

The American female lines w/ an upper case 'A' were researched and numbered by Bobinski. Those w/ a lower case 'a' were done more recently by Chris Matthes et al.

As noted previously in this thread A4 is linked circumstantially to English family 21. Loren Bolinger and an associate are currently using mtDNA to try and connect more of the Bobinski-numbered American families to their probable English roots, and are seeking blood samples from individuals who tail-female to those families. If you have one of these mares, or offspring thereof, and are willing to submit a sample, please pm me for his e-mail address.
