Denman to join his dad at Darley America

Postby wallinga » Thu Nov 07, 2013 4:17 pm

Bit more of a value option, this guy is off to a flyer with his first two year olds. Real Australian damline and doesn't fall far from the tree as far as looks go.

Very intriguing – Especially for those breeders with Danzig or Storm Cat line mares.

On pedigree I actually like him a bit better than his dad for North America.

ALL FOUR of his current runners have at least a double shot of extra Lady Juror. Pinch River has Danehill and Lyphard, plus an extra dose of Fair Trial via his third dam. Law has Sing Sing and Aristophanes. His stakes-placed filly Piacenza has Danzig and Wilkes (Fair Trial). His fourth winner, Grapevine, has Danzig and an obscure son of Court Martial named Major Portion.

Compared to her much more famous half-sister Mumtaz Mahal, Lady Juror is present but not overly so. She's a major speed influence to this day, though, and there's a lot of Lady Juror in the US.

*Grand Reward has Storm Cat as well as a double of Lady Juror through Rahy and Tudor Minstrel.

*Macho Uno is worth a look--his son Wicked Style is off to a decent start in Australia, with a mare base that has a lot more Lady Juror than here. MU has a double of Lady Juror on top, another down under, and a third cross to Lady Juror's 3/4 sibling Abernant. Holy Bull has a STRONG affinity for Lady Juror.

*Cormorant is out of a Tudor minstrel mare. Cormorant, Go For Gin, and Albert the Great all might work.

*Theatrical should be up at the top of the list.

*Wolf Power has a strain of Court Martial and another to Abernant. His foals' running style should complement Denman, and he's punching above his weight as a broodmare sire.

*Lord at War has a son of Aristophanes and a cross of Fair Trial and, like Wolf Power, punches above his weight as a broodmare sire.

Another bloodline to consider is Smart Strike. Cyane, the sire of Smarten, is by Turn-To out of a mare by Beau-Pere, a close genetic relative to Fair Trial. Beau Pere is by Son-In-Law out of a Polymelus mare, FT is by a son of Polymelus out of a Son-In-Law mare. Beau Pere keeps popping up amongst the good crosses for Fair Trial, and for Smart Strike in particular his top earners are out of a who's who of mares with Lady Juror: Lord at War, Danzig, Theatrical, Rahy, Swain. English Channel would be an obvious choice here, too.

Denman was more the sprinting type. People wanting to breed 8-10f horses are better off with Lonhro IMO.

Actually, his stud record so far does not bear that out.

Lonhro was a very good middle-distance horse but he is throwing sprinters. Out of a total of 574 runners, he has only 31 horses who have won at distances of 9f (1800m) or longer. He has only 3 stakes winners out of 574 foals who won a stake at 8.5f or longer--compare to 15 SW for 25 stakes wins between 6-7f.

I agree, I liked him as well. He has some mistakes upfront and I would be careful not to send anything that was upright to him, but I liked his overall package and body type. I still have 2 more to book and haven't ruled him out as a possibility.

Count me in as another person who was very impressed with Denman when I saw him. I wish I had a mare for him.

I am very aware of his stud record. He is throwing out sprinters because he is given sprinting mares. That's the unfortunate thing here in Australia with the market heavily towards 2 yr olds and sprint racing. Lonhro will never get a fair shot at getting 8.5f+ horses in Aus with the way our breeding industry is.

Lonhro's female family is New Zealand bred(typically stamina). Denman's female family is the usual Aussie 5-6f sprinting type.

My point still stands...."people wanting to breed 8-10f horses are better off with Lonhro"
