He was a solid sire with a lot of good runners to his credit including South African HOY Surfing Home, US champion 2yo male Boston Harbor, and Irish HW 2yo male Basim -- generally more a sire of miler speed and precocity than stamina. He was hurt somewhat as a commercial sire by the fact that some of his offspring were coarse and had unattractive heads (the "Capote mule" look). He was bred to some pretty nice mares along the way, so I'd expect some of his daughters to be good producers; multiple G1 winner Dixie Union is out of a Capote mare.

Capote

Postby fastappy » Sun Sep 18, 2005 10:04 pm

B.C. Champion 2 Y.O., Capote, is developing into an excellent broodmare sire (2.3 million in earnings this year). Though pensioned he sired the aforementioned Boston Harbor (Champion 2 Y.O.), Matty G (Sire of Sinister G, Deputy G, MayaKovsky, Little Math Man, etc.) Dance Away Capote, Capote Belle, The Exeter Man, Hollycombe, Agincourt, etc.

He is definitely a source of precocious speed from the Slew Line. I just bought a Capote son, "Thisnearlywasmine" (Capote o/o Stormy But Valid by Valid Appeal). Thisnearlywasmine won the Sunnyslopes stakes (2 Y.O.s) with fractions of 21.2, 44 Flat, & 1:08.2, defeating the speedy In Excessive Bull.

Definitely a speed influence of the slew line.

Sire of sire of sires. He couldn't get more than a mile on the track but was fast and precocious.

Thisnearlywasmine I remember him :)
he came from Florida and stood at Creston Farm about 4 years ago. I had two nicking reports done on one of my mares and he was listing on both reports where NO other sire was duplicated. So obviously they both thought he would be the best choice. I like what I saw he is very good looking, I also remember he had nice temperment. Anyway I didn't think he would be marketable and I was right, it wasn't to long after he was sent out of state. Now he is back interesting. Where does he stand now and how much ? Ha she had any decent runners ?

He only has 16 starters of which (as of 29 Aug 05 - Equineline Report) 15 have won! Avg earning per starter of 26K with a median of 21K. He had not had the best opportunitities, but has done well.

I will stand him at a small farm in Winters, Ca. for 2,000 live foal. He was an outstanding sprinter and set blazing fractions at both Santa Anita and Churchill Downs. He is out of a G1 winner and is very well bred, imo.

Not bad stats. I might consider my mare in 2007. I already have my sire picked for her next year. How do I get a hold of you ? Where is Winters Ca. ?

A friend of mine happen to end up with a Capote gelding who is a spitting image of Capote, just a lot smaller (15.1.) He is technically "dead" with the Jockey Club as the trainer claimed insurance money off of him by somehow proving to the insurance company the horse had died. He is, however, alive and well and quite a nice jumper. According to the trainer, the horse was the fastest 2 furlong horse he had ever seen, but he couldn' t ever learn to rate.

Thisnearlywasmine

Postby fastappy » Mon Sep 19, 2005 11:12 am

Thisnearlywasmine will stand at Bay B Farm, which is a small family operation run by Rick & Kay Padilla. It is 250+ acres and they grow their own Alfalfa and grass hay which is excellent quality.

They don't have a web site at this point, but are listed in the Bloodhorse Source book and C.T.B.A. directory. You can contact Kay at (707) 678-0165 (farm), Cell#(707) 330-9231, Fax #(707)-693-9534,

or by mail at Bay B Farm, 5144 Sweeney Road, Winters, Ca. 95694

What they lack in aesthetics is more than compensated by excellent mare & foal care. The Vet (Lisa Wallace) is excellent and very reasonable. Mare care is $8.50 (short term, $7.50 long term) on irrigated pastures, and foaling is $200 (they use Foal Alert system).

They are one street over from Victory Rose Farm, which is in Vacaville.

Capote is also broodmare sire of Najran, who equaled the World Record for a mile previously held by Dr Fager.

Nijinsky, my name is Jon Denson. In regard to the family operation, I personally feel very confident in the care of the horses, and but feel free to contact Kay Padilla with any concerns. You'll find her to be a very friendly and knowledgeable horse woman. :D

I share your concerns mare care, but in this case I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
