JEH is having a BAD day. Their Texas division had to put down Marked Tree with laminitis.

Hi all,

I posted a couple of articles on the General forum about this. New Mexico is pretty devastated by the losses. These were all really nice stallions, TB and QH alike. Most people know who Favorite Trick and Saratoga Six were, but Gone Hollywood was an up-and-coming stallion here in NM, too.

I don't breed QHs anymore, but I understand the stallions they lost were top notch.

Makes me feel sick inside...

So, so sad. Heartfelt condolences to all the fans and connections.

Pardon my ignorance, but don't barns routinely have smoke detectors and sprinkler systems in place? I seem to recall a couple of big fires last year too where several horses were killed. It would seem logical/necessary with barn fire being such a real danger and with contents so valuable.

1) They never have enough.

2) People can't even get them properly placed in their house, you think they are installed properly in a barn?

Your smoke detector, to do you the most good, should be in the center of the room. Most people put them in corners/abutments where wall meets ceiling... some even in the curve around hall leading into their master bedrooms, but not actually IN the bedroom itself (where a lot of house fires start -- from people falling asleep with a lit cigarette).

Too bad smoke doesn't really follows those paths. Smoke billows up in an arch toward the center of a room. Put your smoke detector near where the ceiling and wall meet, you may as well not have one at all. Should there be an opened/cracked window opposite the alarm, the smoke flows toward the window ... and away from the alarm.

Once again, you're not the only one. It's no secret that I'm not fond of JEH after they tried to kill my mare. I thought they were phasing out their TB operation when I heard Touch Tone had moved this yr., and heard that FT was being bred to QH mares. I guess if phasing out was really their goal, they've certainly succeeded. Sorry to be so cold hearted but I find these incidents a little suspicious.

What happened to your mares???

To the poster above I don't know anything about THESE people but there are plenty of people out there in the world that would indeed be this cruel. Heck people burn up their own FAMILIES for insurance money, a bunch of horses would be nothing. But did this farm even own all these horses?

My mare suffered a rectal tear while at JEH for breeding. They denied any knowledge of it, saying "she must have come that way". Believe me, if she had had it when I dropped her off she would certainly be dead.

I know that Jim Helzer (owner of JEH) owned Marked Tree, but not sure about the New Mex. stallions. I would imagine they were partnerships.

BTW, the website was updated immediately after Marked Tree's death (just to take him off, but no comment), but hasn't been updated since the NM tragedy.
