Shame that you can't. They're both heading toward 28 and it's amazing that they're still going. I didn't read about any pensioning. Anybody heard anything? I had no idea that Slew City Slew was that old. So strange isn't it? To see so many top breed to race sires aging out. In not too many years it'll be the commercial big wheels, Storm Cat and AP Indy.
Yeah, it is sad.
We have a Runaway Groom gelding and just love him to pieces! We just retired him a few months ago. He was so professional on and off the track and as honest as the day is long! I'm planning on turning him into my personal riding/competition horse...
You know, it seems like the older stallions were sounder as well and ran longer distances. Now, all these hot, young, unsound, sprint oriented sires are taking over.
I think Runaway Groom, Slew City Slew, Lord Avie, Broad Brush and Cozzene (not that I could afford them), etc are/were great for the breed. They provided an outcross to the heavy saturation of Mr. prospector and Northern Dancer. I have actually seen weanlings now with triple MP and double ND!! Yikes! Breeders are breeding themselves into a corner.
However, that's another topic!
I just wish my breeding budget was larger!
My mare has no MP or ND so I have a little wiggle room. However, I have to go with the best stallions for my mare in my price range. I wish the above mentioned boys fell within my range.
Of course, my perfect stallion for her would be a stayer with no ND or MP who had over 30 starts, had at least 6% SW from foals and improved his mares. Basically, I would need to bump my breeding budget up to get to Runaway Groom, PLeasant Tap, or Devil His Due. But, SCS falls in there!
I wanted to breed her to Slew City Slew for 2007 but lost out to my husband to Pioneering. However, in 2008 it's most likely SCS unless I get swayed into Service Stripe. I like everything about SS except the distances he ran and sires. Same reason I don't like Pioneering.
As a side note, anyone notice that even though Crafty Prospector is MP and wasn't sound he gets unbelievably sound runners? His numbers are sick for how many starts his kids get! He must have had a freak injury and not one that was conformation/genetic related. I would venture he is one of the soundest sources of MP bloodlines anywhere in terms of what he sires.

Service Stripe was actually a Pin Oak horse. His dam, Wedding Picture, is the dam of Wedding Vow who's the dam of Broken Vow. Strike a Pose, the dam of Wedding Picture, is the dam of Strike a Balance, who's the dam of Peaks and Valleys.
There's lots of talent on the dam's side for both turf and dirt.

All men are equal on the turf - or under it.

Service Stripe
Pokeyman: I bred and own one of the better foals from Service Stripe whose name is Enchanting Star. She is not very big but she is quite an athlete and competitor. The first time we breezed her 5/8s of a mile was at Delaware Park and I caught her in 34 2/5 and 1:00 1/5 under a hold. Later, of course, she ran second in the Frizette Stakes.
Service Stripe happens to nick very well with my Rubiano mare, Jazz N Jamie (see Take Charge Lady) and if your mare is reasonably compatible with SS, don't worry about the other sires. Just raise your foal well.
Good Luck and watch for us next year.
