North Dakota has some very nice studs going VERY cheap right now on their auction with only 9 days left...take a look!

http://www.bidhoof.com/categories.php?c ... nt_id=1866

Not one bid yet on all the nice Darby Dan studs, only $200 to get to Seattle Fitz/Bold Truth/Ten Centuries!

Lost Soldier currently at $200 bid. He's a steal at ten times the current bid..

So does the North Dakota stallion auction mean that you get to bid on the season and only paid 200 instead of the stud fee or 200 plus the stud fee?

RA-you pay only what the final bid price is. So if the final bid is $200 that's what you pay (not $200+ the posted stud price). Certain auctions, like the Iowa Stallion auction, may charge a fee to become a member of their TOBA. Iowa charges an additional $50 if you are not a current member. This is a great way to get your stallion season!

A word of caution. A LOT of the seasons in the auctions are No Guarantee. You pay the auction price for the season. If your mare does not get in foal, aborts, or the foal dies, tough luck, no return, the money is spent and that is that.

I would agree that a lot of the seasons are no guarantee and you must be careful. However, a lot of them are live foal guarantees, as well. It has been my experience that most of the Kentucky stallions are no-guarantee, at least the higher dollar ones. Everything that I have purchased has been a live foal season....and they were to stallions based in Kentucky, Florida and Pennsylvania. But, I would agree, it's buyer beware! Just make sure you klnow the rules before you bid.

madelyn, you left out the other possibility - the stallion dies. This actually happened to me with the TCA season I purchased for Devil's Bag.

Great prices could be had on live foal season at the Iowa and North Dakota auctions yesterday! Numerous bargains were there to be had....especially if you are looking for a regional stallion. If you breed in West Virginia or New York I would contact Brandi at the ITBOA Monday to see if you can get some of the left-over stud fees for $500. Her number is 1-800-577-1097. None of these seasons sold...what a shame!

Be very careful with the GEVA auction... A few years ago, I was the high bidder on a Rio Verde season (somewhere around $800 if I remember correctly). The stallion owner, Terry Lovinger, then tried to throw an extra $250 booking fee on top of the final bid. When I reported the situation to GEVA, they sided with the stallion owner and said I was being difficult by refusing to pay the extra $250. I'll never ever go that route again...

On the GEVA site under Stallion Season Auction it states:

Terms of the breeding agreement are issued by the stallion owner of the farm where the stallion stands. GEVA inc. has no involvement in the terms or conditions of the breeding agreement. GEVA merely provides the season for auction without any further liability. Booking fees may apply.

Patuxet... The booking fee racket was not disclosed when I purchased the Rio Verde season.

Does anyone else know of any other stallion auction that allows season donators to tack on a booking fee?

Most disconcerning was that GEVA failed to post the add on fee... It would have been much more ethical and less of a headache for all involved if they simply put the booking fee next to the season listing.
