At least give the poor fellows some kind of company, or the chance to talk to the ladies across the fence.
Agree...Let 'em out in the sun paddock for a few months to wind down and let nature work its magic!

Interesting to note that one of Australias premier race horses and Champion sires also suffered from a late onset complete lack of libido.
Heroic (Valais ex Chersonses by Clygad) faced the starter 51 times for 21 wins, 11 seconds and four thirds, racing from 2-5 years. He was Australia's champion sire seven times from 1933-1939, however, he was known for some neutric behaviour at the barrier which cost him several important races. Perhaps this was again at play when at 15 years old and in sound health, he flatly refused to mate any more mares.
Vets were bought in to help solve the problem, with some experts recommending a long rest, but to no avail. The champion racehorse and sire refused to ever mate another mare.
How frustrating would that be for his owners!

There was good ol' Seattle Slew, it took time for them to figure out he needed a foal standing there (a filly? was he a pedophile?
Madelyn, maybe he just wanted to make sure the mares were proven producers?
I never heard that story. I did read a letter written by George Washington once that discussed in depth the problems they were having with the donkey jack sent to him by the King of Spain as a mule producer. Seems he preferred jennys to mares and they had to use a tease and switch technique. It took them a while to figure out his issue.
