You have a lot of very good ideas and your main point (Freud's get will probably be turfy) makes sense to me; but I can't agree that it can be even be argued that Storm Cat's best foals have been grass runners. ..

LLBean, I don't disagree with you about Storm Cat being a phenomenal source of north American dirt ability. However, if you look at his nine champions, five of them are 3yo and older in England, Ireland, Italy, and Germany, one is a juvenile filly in France, and the other three are dirt juvenile fillies. His most accomplished runner, Giant's Causeway, ran roughshod over his very deep competition. His other non-juvenile champions Black Minnaloushe, Catrail, Mistle Cat, and Munaaji all defeated very good, deep competition in their various countries. On that basis alone, one can, and I do, argue that his very best foals are grass runners.

I look at Storm Cat as an amplifier--he takes whatever the mare offers him (sprint miler, grass router, etc) and superimposes brilliant speed over that ability.

For the information on Empiric--you are welcome!

This him? Very flashy - though he appears to have changed genders since the picture was taken, as he's listed as a filly here? If its not him, they're all good looking, anyway.

Do you know the name of his brother with Bill Mott?

A Giant's Causeway NY bred just broke her maiden rather commandingly in her first turf start (out of an Affirmed mare as well) and it would be logical for some of Freud's progeny to try those races also. There's a 2YO maiden NY breds turf race in the book on 8/4, before the sales.

Sounds like you are saying that all turf horses are lousy mover, lol.

One needs to take into consideration that all European horses-- and that includes Ireland-- run on turf, and that all American horses came from that source. Now a lot of Europeans have purchased US horses such as Storm Cat offspring and breed them on for their turf racing. I would venture saying that you never know until you try. Perhaps I'm wrong but I would imagine that the lawn is kinder to their feet, and if they don't have good strong feet, the dirt will burn them up or break a bone.

And Secretariat? Well, he was UNIQUE. Some people call him a FREAK.

Looks like Freud had his first winner -- on the turf, naturally -- with My Interpretation. Another daughter, confusingly called Interpretation, in the same race, got third. Both horses are owned by Lakin but My Interpretation is with Kimmel and the other one with Mott.

There were no speed records set, but the fractions were 23:09, 47:45, 1::11:81, 1:36:54 and 1:42:83, which is not bad for two year old s statebred fillies. The combined entry went off as second favorite. I just looked up the favorite, Summer Palace, and guess what, she was by Freud too! She got left behind in 10th in spite of her Pletcher/Velazquez team.

Higher Incentive, also a Freud, finished 6th.

Only four Freud fillies in the race. Looks like everyone's thinking turf.

i saw a bunch of Freud's and Giant's Causeways up at Saratoga and was impressed with all of them, not only on looks but performance. Some of them I thought might have been sent to the turf too soon, but the opportunity was there with good weather and a good course. I think probably they can run equally good on either surface.

Thia ia the email I sent out a few days ago as we bred one mare to Freud and will be breeding two in 2006. After our trip to NY to breed and look closely at him several of our friends started to take notice of him and his sales figures. I just put this together yesterday so the FREUD-FACTOID should be pretty much up to date.

As a small farm who has just got involved in the commercial Thoroughbred breeding game we are always keeping our eye on the stallions we breed to and are interested in for the future. In the late spring of 2005 we though it would be a good idea to TRY and get a breeding to a young hot stallion whom we had watched for sometime. Freud, a son of Storm Cat and out of the great broodmare Mariah's Storm is a full brother to POWER STALLION - "Giant's Causeway" now labled as "The Iron Horse". Freud offered us two proven power pedigreed parents and the bonus of having Giants Causeway as his full brother at an affordable price.(Giants Causeway stands for $200,000.00 for 2006) With a few phone calls we were first told Freud would only have a handful of breedings left for SELECT mares. Then we got word our mare would fit into their "SELECTION." With one cover our daughter of Victorious is in foal to Freud for an early April foal.

During this time the 2 yr. old in training sales were gearing up and FREUD as well as his Full brother Giants Causeway were the hot commodities. Freud's 2 yr. olds in training were fetching well into the six figure range with ease. What makes this even more amazing? This was all on a $5,000.00 stud fee !!!!!

Fast forward to now. Freud has amassed a stellar group of first crop runners. Ranking him in the top 18 in the country as of the first week of September 2005. Frauds first foal to start would be My Interpretation running a very game second on July 15th 2005 at the prestigious Belmont Park, in a MSW for $41,000.00 going 5f. His first foal to break its maiden would be My Interpretation on August 3rd 2005, winning at Saratoga going a 1 1/4 miles MSW $46,000.00 (bringing home $36,005 of that purse). Interpretation would run 3rd in the same race. Next was Oedipus O'Neal again at Saratoga, winning on August 22nd 2005 going a mile and a 1/16th on the turf in a $46,000.00 MSW. Then on August 24th 2005 Follow My Dream wins sprinting on the dirt in a $45,000 MSW at Saratoga. September 4th Lovely Dream would run 2nd in her first start going 6 1/2f for $45,000.00 MSW at Saratoga. The latest racing news from Freuds foals is an update provided from www.laklandnorth.com FREUD DELIVERS A 1 2 PUNCH at Belmont !!
"9/16/05 - Homebred INTERPRETATION, f. 2, Freud - Devon Ridge, by Cox’s Ridge became her sire's 4th 2 year old winner. For her impresssive Belmont win, she was chosen a Thoroughbred Times Today Notable Maiden Winner, She is trained by William I. Mott.
Lifetime: 3-1-0-1, $31,850.
Mare history: Devon Ridge has an 04 colt by Precise End, an 05 colt by Hook and Ladder, and is foal to Dream Run for 2006..

Second in the same race was another Freud filly RESUME INNONENCE, f 2, Re Re Be Be by Sheikh Albadou. This filly was also bred by Thomas/Lakin. Watch for her next out. She is trained by Gary Contessa.

Interpretation was outrun early but made a four-wide move in the turn under Racing Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey and drove with determination through the stretch to a 11/4-length victory in her third start. The chestnut filly, who is trained by Racing Hall of Fame conditioner Bill Mott, finished third in her previous start in a 11/16-mile maiden special weight race on August 3 at Saratoga Race Course. Interpretation is one of two winners from as many starters out of the placed Cox’s Ridge mare Devon Ridge."

With all of this exciting news, there's still more! My Interpretation became Freuds first Blacktyped runner! Placing 2nd in the first running of the "P.G. Johnson Stake". Going a mile and a 16th on the turf. My Interpretation was game busting to the lead and fighting with the field to finish a very impressive 2nd in only her 5th life time start!

With just a handful of foals who have raced as 2 year olds and many more in training soon to start Freud is a sire to watch. His fee of a mere $5,000.00 was destine to increase with his runners successes. Recently announced, Lakland North has increased his 2006 fee to $7,500.00 if booked prior to December 1st of 2005. At which time its been rumored he will jump again to $10,000.00!

Below is a small sampling of Freuds foals who have been offered at the sales.

After visiting the farm I wil say...speaking as a Dressage rider and old eventer I would take that MOVEMENT any day! These are horses who cover ground effortlessly as babies. It appears they aren't doing too shabby as older horses either! not to mention they are damn PURDY to look at!

Unfortunately, looks are deceiving. No doubt, this is a flashy, well put together filly, and sportshorse people would drool over it, but white stockings do not a race horse make, lol. But then again, my all-time favorite race horse had 3 white stockings: SECRETARIAT

Not really... I bought that one Hip 279, at the Jul 18, Kentucky Selected July Yearlings Sale. He's a big strapping colt too. Full brother to It's A Pleasure... trained by Bill Mott.
