For every Grade 1 winner that grandsons and great grandsons of Hail to Reason sire, there are plenty of The Green Monkeys that grandsons of Storm Cat sire.

Cozzene is a tremendous sire..Period. If you breed to race, you can't do better. He averages an impreesive amount of percentage of stakes winners. Plus, I have never seen a stallion move up his mares more. He is quite the improvement sire. He is totally the real deal.....

Likewise, AP Indy has YET to improve his mares. He doesn't drag them to the dumps but he doesn't improve them either judging by his AEI/CI ratio.

He can't come close to Cozzene in that department. AP Indy might hit more home runs but I would love to see what Cozzene would do with his book since he ALREADY consistently improves his mares...like no other stallion I have seen.

TGM ran "the race of his life" a couple days before he was sold and the people selling cashed in accordingly. If buyers of two year olds are unaware of the inherent risks of such blistering works that's there misfortune(caveat emptor).

There's value in Storm Cat sons if one shops around. As pointed out Storm and a Half is a bargain at $2,500 based on his AEI of 1:18 to a CI of .77. Why pay more if you don't have to? I like Storm Cat's such as Storm and a Half at $2,500 but not Giant's Causeway at $300,000. But that's just me.

Horsenuts (I like that name!)...I totally agree with you on both points. I'd also add Freud as a good value at $10,000. There are some Storm Cat sons out there holding their highs high, but how far and few in between are they?

Actually, at the low end (say, the $2,000 stud fee), most of those mares have been bred to backyard mutts, so almost anything new would have to be an improvement. That's not to say that the mares are worth a bucket of oats, but when they've been bred to sires not worth any more and then get to something that was at least bred to be a runner, it has to be an improvement.

At that level, I don't think you can beat Evansville Slew. At $2,500/fee and getting $51,000/average earning/runner, how can you do better?

If you want to go to $7,500, how about Pioneering? Overbrook has had no clue how to manage this horse's career despite him being a 1/2 to Storm Cat, and he still gets something like $57,000/average earning/runner.

And, at $6,000, long live Slew City Slew!!!

But there's a difference between trying to breed a racehorse and trying to breed something that can get shuttled off to stud even if it never makes it to the races - like Storm And A Half. He's improving his mares, but I'm not quite sure what he's improving them off of. If he's being bred to mares that were sent to Mr Ed, I'd think any sire could move them up.

I have a Forestry mare out of a Storm Boot mare in foal to Van Nistelrooy. I hope the foal is a filly so I can move her up by breeding to Stormy Atlantic. I am not sure though, because there were only 117 listed studs by Storm Cat, and who can make a decent selection from that small pool?

geowarrior, Mustang Jock is getting a tremendous amount of mares this year,so, Jock will take care of himself. Counter Punch on the other hand has a wonderful pedigree and needs quality mares to show just how good a sire he can be. I breed to race, primarily, so I will know how his babies will be raised, broken and trained. Next year Jock gets a chance but this year it is all Punch.

I think breeding to Mr Sekiguchi will offer a tremendous value at $2,500 in 2008. Maybe they'll even throw in some Teruyaki Sauce if you book to him.
