Let's Talk Big Brown

According to what I read his sire Boundary was pensioned at 15 because of declining fertility and his dam sire Nureyev had fertility problems. He might also have fertility problems. If he turns out to be as fertile as George Washington he will not be breeding mares for long. I do not know if his foot problems are hereditary but finding out now by doing everything possible to improve his feet seems like a good idea. Some horses have supposedly gone from poor hooves to strong healthy hooves.

There have been a number of Danzig line stallions with fertility problems.
Lure and Furiously are two more that quickly come to mind.

I swear I'm not delusional but doesn't it seem like it's a matter of time before Big Brown has "Claiborne" tattooed on his arse? Or his name officially changed to Big "Claiborne" Brown? I mean he practically sweats it. To the point the DRF decided to write an article about it. It seems like there's a thing waiting to happen with them, I can't put my finger on it--maybe they just have a really good PR department that specializes in subliminal messages
. When I pointed out the 'most widely recognized' quote, I just don't know why they'd make a point of saying that if it's Darley or Three Chimneys or Coolmore... I mean to the point that you'd distinguish one from the other with the 'one of the most widely recognized' labels. You'd just say you're getting some very serious offers from some of the most respected and prominent stud farms in the world... I figure there's gotta be something particularly special like a more personal connection that's also got one of the more impressive histories.
I guess if nothing else they'll do like everybody and send mares to him and try to get a good one without having to pay to stand him themselves, much cheaper, less risky, etc and if he's not gonna reproduce himself then it doesn't do they much good anyway to try to stand him. Was Big Brown foaled there or elsewhere? I know sometimes mares just stay put, sometimes they ship home,etc...

There are other solid sires that have no ND in their pedigree, along with Seattle Slew.
If Big Brown is managed right, it is entirely possible to get a great result when he goes to stud.
I agree Diomed.

Actually if we're talking BB specifically, I have no idea where he was foaled (I figure if he had been foaled at Claiborne we'd have heard about it more so I assume not), but yes his close family background is Claiborne, per the DRF article. Claiborne sure seemed pretty proud of their connection to him on their website a week ago. I went to the homepage and it was right there to smack you in the face. Even if it were just that his sire stood there, he's not standing there anymore...they want to associate the name Claiborne with quality stallions via the latest Derby winner. It's not like they're booking mares from Boundary off of this, it's a general 'think warm and fuzzy thoughts about us folks here at Claiborne' kind of thing. If it's enough for them, it's enough for me.
