Hi Ill-bred,

You actually look rather well-bred :)

Thanks for the kind words.

I'll do at least 2 passes on any yearling sale catalog and discuss with clients the merits of the youngsters. If the need arises, I'll go but otherwise I'll follow the sale in NY. As much as I like Lexington I go when I need to attend.

I do follow the yearling sales vigorously because they offer a solid glimpse of the market and commercial appeal.

Regards,

Pete

Hi Madelyn,

I like human twins if they're identical since you can evaluate the conformation of one and not have to do the other.

Didn't Austin Powers like Japaneese twins? :)

How did Rocking Trick do this breeding season?

Pete

Hi Pete, thanks for asking, he was a very good boy. All of the mares we bred to him are in foal (100%).. we did some leases to get him a few more mares, but I guess because we are a new farm and in Louisville, not Lexington, folks are in a wait and see mode. I will probably sell a few of the mares in foal. So his book was 13 mares. I had three others but two had too much Storm Cat too close so they went to my Mr. Prospector-line stallion. The third was a maiden and was in heat before any of my experienced mares so she went to the experienced stallion... it was Jan 31 and I thought the experience of just one cover would be good for her and, well, she took.....

Maybe it should be Fertility Farm, not River Run..

Hi Madelyn,

Fertility is good on breeding farms. Congrats, sounds like you had a good season.

Keith,

You bring up two interesting stallions. I can make a case for and against both but they do have potential and are with farms that can really help these guys get going.

Pete: I am going to the FT Yearling sale this week. Are you? Love to meet you and say hello. I am aiming to buy 1-2 colts to pinhook at this sale. I go to FT Saratoga and Keeneland to buy for my stable.

Have you seen the FT Saratoga Select catalog? I'm new to the game (under 2 years) but does the book seem rather "light" to you, not just in # of hips, but in depth and quality?

Just wonderin'...

My screen name is both a nod to my roots (working class Chicago family) and Illinois-bred horses, who are often (fittingly) referred to as Ill-breds. :)

Hi Dray,

Yes, the Saratoga Select catalog is lighter in numbers and I believe quality too. I'd expect that the downwards trend on this sales average will continue.

A.P. Indy and Kingmambo are noticeably absent and there's a good weighting of younger stallions with fees under $50,000, many at or under $20,000.

The KY sale this week is going the other way, larger catalog and a rising average over the past few years.

I'll be going to the Saragtoga sales, not the KY. Best of luck at the sale.

Hi Ill-Bred,

I knew about the Illinois bred horses, but I'd have thought that a working class upbringing in Chicago would have made you a

Windy City Kiddie?

Dray, looks like your choice of Forest Camp heard you - he's getting warm.

Hi Dray,

Forest Camp's been jumping up the freshman sire chart. Now with 5 winners from only 6 starters, 2 stakes horses, over $100k in earnings and #3 on the list.

He's had about 4 winners in the last 3 weeks.

It's still early in the season for freshmen, but he's gotten hot and might be one of the tops in his generation.

I will be at the KY sale, just as an observer.. leaving the trailer and checkbook at home! But I think the sales are very interesting and informative to watch.

I really like him, mostly because of Deputy Minister. Colt or Filly, this line seems to be as strong as they come. Deputy Minister or Silver Deputy mares seem to be valuable... and as a sire of sires, DM is tops.

Has anyone compared the #'s between DM and Storm Cat, see how close they are in terms of "success"?
