Again not in any order and this time I'm going for overall sire career success.

1. Grand Reward
2. Offlee Wild
3. Pollard's Vision
4. Rock Hard Ten
5. Saint Liam (think he may surprise despite poor confirmation)
6. Purge
7. Leroidesanimaux (BRZ) (more wishful thinking)
8. Unforgettable Max (overpowers his lightweight brother)
9. Kitten's Joy (turf is the new black)
10. Pico Central (BRZ) (still my Florida pick, even though FOS hates him  )

hi guys

Selecting horses that have some quality pedigree...some quality race performance and some quality conformation is arguably not a difficult task. Selecting ones that WILL be successful sires is another thing altogether.

That said (and as I've indicated previously) when I saw Indian Ocean (who stands for $4,000), I was quite taken. This guy is a lot of horse (to my way of thinking)...grand...good size...extremely correct...beautifully proportioned and with a special presence. He's extremely athletic and a very fluid mover (cat-like might be a fair description).

As a racehorse, not only did he expose his brilliance by winning at 6 1/2 F (on the dirt) in 1:14 and change...but he also won a G3 at Hollywood Park (also on the dirt) over two of the best of his generation (Surf Cat and Buzzards Bay) going a mile and a sixteenth.

Everything about him suggests (to me anyway) that he could become a Big-time sire. We'll have to wait and see what his first foals look like (in 2007)...before making a more definitive judgment...but I sense that he's got the makings to get quality two-year-olds and classic threats that could go on.

He currently stands for $4k...but don't let his minimal stud fee fool you, he looks to be a lot of horse with a real pedigree (1st dam by Halo...2nd dam by Gone West...3rd dam a Northern Dancer full sister to Storm Bird)...and he has a lot of quality about him.

Indian Ocean is my (what might be described) under-the-radar pick, of stallions retired to stud in 2006.

Best to you.

Respectfully

Austique, I agree with most of your list, but there are some that could be debated a little more than the rest.

1. Offlee Wild, I was a huge fan of his as a race horse. He is from a great family and has a great race sire. I'm totally not convinced of Wild Again as a sire of sires yet. Offlee Wild should be in the 7500-10k range and would be more appealing. But Darley will do their best with him.

2.Kittens Joy, Once again loved as a race horse, but is the US the right market for him? All turf and distance. He might not suit the American race style of dirt and sprint. Plus his babies probably will be late bloomers.

Keith, I also like your list very much, but there are a couple that I would like to understand more. they are:

1. Consolidator, Way overpriced for his pedigree and performance. Should be in the 10k range. That could hurt him.

2.Wando, Raced against a softer Canadian line up. When he visited the US to take on our best what did he do? Not sure if Langfuhr is the real deal just yet. Lawyer Ron almost had me convinced about him. The thoroughbred review web site also has Langfuhr listed as a worst value.

3. Roman Ruler, I think it is only a matter of time before Fusaichi Pegasus is dropped in fee and from the from. Roman is a half brother to El Corredor though, so he might have a shot. Not woth the 30k to me though.

But I do think Oratory is great value. As is Bowmans Band.

Derby2004,

1. Agreed Wild Again has been soft so far as a sire of sires, but he did get the prematurely exported Wild Rush and I think the female family can only help him. He's going to be well-managed. I think he's got a shot.

2. His sire did get the very nice MDO (sorry I'm not going to attempt to spell it  ) who was an excellent dirt horse and will the rush toward Polytrack, Kitten's Joy has a shot. Plus you know Ramsey will breed a ton of mares to him. I also want to see Johar and Kitten's Joy carry on the Lear Fan legacy. Where's the love for Lear fan people! :x

As for Consolidator, he was booked full at that fee (Lord, knows why) and Darley again manages their stallions well. I agree he's overpriced at that fee, but it wouldn't be totally out of the ordinary to see him jump up and make something of himself. I personally won't use him though.

I too hope that Kittens Joy wil make it. But I see him as a top turf sire and getting more interest from across the pond. He will be very commercial though. I just think Royal Academy is a better choice for that style. He has already proven himself as a top turf sire, is form the family of Storm Cat, is a very commercial stallion, and is 10k less than Kittens Joy. PLus his name is more masculine :D . As far as Offlee Wild, I would send a mare to him in a heartbeat if he was a little less. Huge heart for racing, great family, loved his style. Maybe I can get a discount season from a bloodstock agent and give a whirl. He would look good with a Slew line mare. Seems like inbreeding Slew has been working pretty well.

Keith, Mass Media (#5 on your list) was briefly retired to stud at Hill n Dale, then went back into training. I don't believe he bred mares in 2006.

I, too, am a fan of Oflee Wild. If I had a mare that suited him I would have been delighted to breed to him.
