PRINCEQUILLO NO GREEN CARD

Postby louis finochio » Mon Jun 19, 2006 7:01 am

Princequillo was smuggled into the USA by submarines during wartime.

Does any one remember the story of Princequillo, as this is a piece of TB history?

His mother was moved from France to Ireland at the start of WWII. He later moved to the US but not in a sub. Initially he was not felt to be more than a cheap claimer but soon developed ionto a great stayer. Ellen Parker has his story at this link.

Thanks Rick: Great link, I owe you one. Louis

The PQ data base said that Princequillo came over in a submarine, they had better correct this error.

Louis, the comments say 'smuggled through' German subs, not on them. A bit overdramatic perhaps, but hardly an error - German subs were a risk for any ship at that time.

Thanks Lucy: I must have read it wrong. When I was on a troop ship going to Germany, we were caught in a violent storm. I can just picture a TB going up and down for a fortnight, like the botttom just fell out of an elevator.

 Wow thanks for the chuckle Louis. I got this image of a horse looking through a periscope.

Thanks Rick for the great link. Hancock's VA farm still stands near Charlottesville. It was once apart of John Kluge's large landholdings, but was recently sold. The barn where Princequillo stood was renovated by the second Mrs. Kluge and is now an elegant carriage museum. (Kluge is married to his third much younger wife and still gets around in his 90's) The wonderful history of these horses is music to my ears. It is truly ashame that this sire line could not survive over time, but for what it worth, no one will ever be able to talk of SECRETARIAT with mentioning PRINCEQUILLO.

Is it really true that there is no tail male descendant of Princequillo? My inxperienced question would then be - if not, why not?
