Tiger Ridge...buh-bye

Postby austique » Wed Jun 21, 2006 3:46 pm

In a move sure to make Sam smile Tiger Ridge will be leaving us to take up residence in South Africa. I find this a bit surprising. He's been a decent sire. Can get you a nice sales return. Walmac had told me last year they were thinking of moving him to KY.

Apparently, South Africa wants some Storm Cat and they want it NOW!

Thank GOD :!:

You know .. I feel there is someone in Florida deserving of a... never mind. Rewarding the removal of a bad stallion with sexual favours would be a bad thing.

I don't know what particular breeding program they have for Tiger Ridge, but I think I know why: his damline. They have all these Al Mufti (Roberto - Lassie Dear) daughters and granddaughters running about...and soon enough there will be Victory Moon fillies going off to stud.

Black Minnaloushe is (will be?) definitely the class of the Storm Cat stallions down there. They have Tiger Ridge, BM, Mogok, and Portrush. Both Mogok and Portrush are purple-pedigreed but unraced.

They are getting two kinds of new stallions: the blue-blooded ne'er-do-wells, and stallions with SERIOUS credentials. At this point in his career, I'd put Tiger Ridge in the former category.

hi guys

Hartley DeRenzo and Walmac obviously had their hand on the pulse (re: Tiger Ridge) and felt the time was right to cut the cord. I never sensed they had genuine confidence in his future as a sire...but I felt they were good poker players waiting for just the right moment to cash in. The moment obviously arrived.

I sense that the odds are leaning in the favor of Florida sire Sweetsouthernsaint moving also (in his case North)...possibly sooner rather than later. No certainty for 2007...but signals seem to be getting stronger.

Awww...be nice you guys. For all his glaring faults as a racehorse, he was a decent sire.

71% starters
56% winners
5.8% stakes winners
and a graded stakes winner to his credit
Median earnings of $17,401
And an AEI of 1.52 compared to a CI 1.21 (does anybody else find this comparision as useless as I do)

I agree he wasn't lighting the world on fire and sales wise he was starting to stumble, but he's not so God-awful. I can think of worse ones at the "Farm that shall not be named" And no I never used him or considered him, but give props where props are due.

I will -- grudgingly -- concede that he was better than I'd thought he'd be. It's the principle of the whole thing. I mean we're talking about a horse who never ever started until he was 5, only made 5 starts, never won and never even saw stakes company unless it happened to be walking by his stall in the morning.

He was at stud for one reason and one reason only .. pedigree. I will never support that. I don't give a damn how blue the blood is, the whole point to this game is to breed RACEHORSES, not horses that look good on paper. If they can't race, they shouldn't be bred. Hell, I'd rather breed to a horse who made 75 starts with 10 wins and never made it higher than mid-level allowance than a horse like Tiger Ridge.

BTW .. personal interest... ONE Kissin Kris filly was bred to him. Resulted in a 2004 filly named Tiger Love, so there is at least one Tiger Ridge that I hope hits. Noting the damn, I'm not holding my breath.

Still haven't received a work on it yet.

Slewacide only made one start and he turned out okay  , but I get your point nevertheless. Back to watching Ronnie DeFeo try to wiggle his way outta jail.

And Danzig made 3. There's always exceptions, I just didn't feel he'd be one of them. I could say something really politically incorrect right now about my first impression of his looks (specifically his "mental awarenes" level) ... but I'd be blacklisted for sure if I did.

Can't agree more, if they didn't run and show something why would you every go to them. Danzig did show something, Red Ransom showed something. I see more advertisements for stallions that cost 2.8mil as a yearling and that is the only credential. Joseph Estes- Race record, conformation, pedigree- in that order. Number 2 and 3 could be suspect, but number 1 was never an exception.

Regarding Sweetsouthernsaint, he won't be going anywhere. At least, not accoring to owner Harold Plumley. But his stud fee will definately be raised for '07.

Hi folks,

Tiger Ridge was slowing at the sales and looking a lot like Wheaton, reliable sire of winners and not special. Not a bad time to move him.

Austique, I consider AEI/CI (also developed by Joe Estes) to be amongst the very few statistically reliable tools available. They're not cut and dried, they have to be interpreted but they're factual. Combined with percentages of runners/winners etc., you can make good profiles of stallion performance that gives a far clearer picture than the spin you'll get from the farms.

Regards,

Pete

hi Kelly Kip

Thanks for sharing your insights.

If Mr Plumley (and/or Ocala Stud) has issued such a proclamation, I sense that some close to the horse didn't get the memo...and/or still have their doubts. I mention that because apparently there is still speculation (including from some close to the horse) that there's a 50-50 chance (their words) that SSS will be heading north...possibly for the 2007 breeding season...

...hmmm.
