Follow up question. Just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you will. So even if you vote that you think A.I. should be approved, doesn't mean you personally would use it.

If A.I. were approved, would you use it?

Yes, I'd use it. I really don't mind the extra expense of shipping in for my better mares, but its cost prohibative for my regional mares who might benefit from seeing stallions like Slew City Slew, Silver Ghost, or Jade Hunter who are uncommercial, proven stallions that could improve those regional mares' pages.

Absolutely. There are nice stallions in FL I'd love to use (if I had good mares to breed) AND nice stallions in KY, NY, etc. I am NOT going to ship a mare or a mare/foal that far, for me even Ocala is 7 hours. So to be able to take my mare to the AI center (which is about an hour away I think) or learn to do it myself would be much better and I'd be able to use those stallions I'd not consider otherwise (like Slew City Slew). That doesn't mean I wouldn't use FL stallions though, there are some nice ones down in Ocala I'd love to get a foal out of.
And yes if I had a really nice mare I'd use ET too.

Every mighty oak was once an acorn that stood its ground.
I'd use it for our stallion if someone wanted me to ship his semen, just like we offer for non-JC mares now... but it's a pain in the rear and I prefer live cover. For my mares I'd just keep using live cover... it wouldn't really save anything when breeding for our regional program, by the time you haul the mare to the vet and back over and over again you might as well just take her to the stallion. Of course, if I ever wanted to breed to a "far away" stallion I might consider it, but it's just so much easier in this small regional market to cover as nature intended.

Maybe. My mares live just outside Lexington, so in most cases, I'd rather continue with live cover. But last year, I had a mare that I really wanted to breed to Peace Rules. I didn't do it because he was in Florida and I wasn't about to ship. So if a situation like that arose again, I'd certainly at least consider it.

My OHhhhh My...would I ???...I absolutely believe I would not !!!...That is one of the mysteries that makes a Thoroughbred a thoroughbred.....I don't raise or breed anything else !!...but I love them all !!

That's what it comes down to for me to. It's not that it will lower stud fees but shipping semen instead of a mare and baby is just cheaper and I don't have board except where I want to board. Not to mention the whole safety issue. The idea of shipping a mare practically across country is giving me the willies. I know other people do it and she's done it since she's a Kentucky bred but I don't have to like it.
Hell yeah! Think how much we would save in boarding fee's. We wouldn't have mares coming back starved, barron, hurt or sick, foals getting deseases and dying and the like. Could breed to an out of state sire that is more marketable for the same price, without all of the above. Sorry if I repeated anyone haven't read anyone else's post yet.
No wonder people quit or don't last long in this business
too many things can go wrong when an owner isn't personally in charge of his own horses.

just think.....your mare is in NY... match's up nice with a stallion in CA......no problem...call ups...or your mare match's up with a stallion in brazil......no problem...call ups..............austraila...no problem.........it's all greed on kentucky's part......the outcrossing that would be avalible with south american horses would only help the breed.....no more foal's colicking on long van ride ...less accidents in transport...ect...ect...
