Suggestions for stallion fee for spring next year.

Postby Dianna » Fri Jul 07, 2006 5:27 pm

I have a stallion named Alignment Flyer out of Flying Paster and Belle O' Damascus.
He has not been used to breed TB's. It's a long story. I could use some suggestions in a asking price for a breeding fee for next year.
I will be advertising etc.

Thank you.

There are some many proven stallions to choose from in todays market it would be hard for a mare owner to pay for a stallion like yours.

If I owned your stallion and I really wanted to see if he could produce races horses. I would offer his services for free.

Once he gets some foals on the ground and they look like or even become race horses, then I would charge a fee.

Another route you can take is to purchase mares that may match with him physically. I would look for mares that have produced race horses in the past. They may be older but at least you know you have a shot of getting a runner. If you dont get any thing on the ground that looks the part, I think you can figure out what part of the equation is not working.

I hope I did not come off as being harsh but that is just my 2 cents....good luck

dianna,

here is your direct competition for those seeking your sire line.

http://www.stallionregister.com/sr_sire_page.asp

Flying Victor Flying Paster Victory Rose Thoroughbreds CA $2,000
Michael's Flyer Flying Paster Victory Rose Thoroughbreds CA $2,000
Paster's Caper Flying Paster E. A. Ranches CA $1,000

compare pedigree, race record, earnings, progeny and then see if you can assign a value to your sire. Might want to check th 05 mares bred report to see how many mares the three CA sires covered. There is a link to that report from the above site's home page.

Given the age of your sire by the time your free progeny (if you went that route) hit the track to determine a diffrent stud fee value he may not be around anymore. I would assign a fee, advertise like you indicated and see what you can attract. You might try discounting things like mare care that reduce upfront costs to attract breeders.

Post your sire and farm info at this new californina forum.

Dianna,

I'm sure your stallion is beautiful and you would like to see his babies do well.

That said...As an individual who loves the horse and who has helped save many an unwanted horse out of the killpen, I would ask you to carefully examine (within yourself) why you think breeding your stallion will produce offspring that will have any success as Thoroughbreds.

Breeding Thoroughbreds is easy. Breeding a Thoroughbred that someone wants to take care of and not just toss aside is a LONG SHOT, even with Graded Stakes winners bred to Graded Stakes winners. Even sons of Storm Cat, that made over $100k as racehorses have a hard time producing anything at stud or booking mares. That is the reality of it. What happens to all those horses (experiments)? There are many horse rescue groups that could enlighten you.

I really don't mean to be rude or to burst your dreams for your stallion, but even the fact that you stated your stallion is "OUT OF" Flying Paster, underscores a serious lack of required knowledge for anyone to be considering breeding and marketing a stallion. The correct way to present Alignment Flyer is: Alignment Flyer, by Flying Paster -- out of Belle O'Damascus.

Please take breeding your stallion more seriously than what to charge as a stud fee. What will happen to these beautiful creatures once they are born? Will you take responsibility for their future and their fate?

Dianna,

You might try donating a season to one of the TB rescues in CA or possibly the CTOBA when they have an auction.
