A rare "TRIPLE" in Texas with WRENICE's win @ LS

Postby jellac » Tue Jul 11, 2006 9:50 pm

Last Saturday, July 8th, the first races in the 2006 edition of the Texas Stallion Stakes Series was run at Lone Star for nominated 2YO fillies of nominated sires from the 2003 breeding season.

The winner was WRENICE, a daughter of Uncle Abbie, a son of KINGMAMBO out of a full sister to the dam of LEMON DROP KID. WRENICE won gate to wire, setting a new track record for this race and broker her maiden doing so....in her second out. She galloped over the finish line, really never challenged during the race.

A Nice "TRIPLE" for WRENICE and her connections isn't it????...............BUT WAIT IT GETS BETTER (and this is the reason I'm posting it under "STALLIONS") -

WRENICE was the first SW for her SIRE......!!!!

Here's the info posted on him at the db -

Breeder: w.s. farish and mrs. wm. kilroy
State Bred: KY
Winnings: 18 Starts: 3 - 4 - 1, $137,795

Very correct young stallion. First dam is full sister to the dam of Belmont Stakes winner Lemon Drop Kid, resulting in practically identical pedigrees. Entered stud in 2002. First foals are yearlings of 2004. Stands at Key Ranch, in Salado, Texas. Website address: www.keyranch.com

Here's the link to her pedigree - it's an interesting close up inbreeding to Seattle Slew.....

Anyway I thought it an interesting pedigree to study for those trying to breed a superior racehorse in the regional markets from somewhat unremarkable stallions/mares....in this case it would seem that the close up inbreeding to Seattle Slew thru a daughter and a son that share full sibs as dams may have been the key to re-energizing/maximizing the best elements in this pedigree....

halo - Very glad you asked b/c I managed to get that wrong when I posted it last night - this despite reviewing her pedigree more than twice <sigh>

The two full siblings I cited are actually half siblings: Lassie Dear and Evasive: both by Buckpasser but out of different dams with different pedigrees/bloodlines. They are in turn both bred to Seattle Slew to produce Wrenice's sire's dam and her dam's sire. So the inbreeding is to Seattle Slew thru his offspring as a result of being bred to two different Buckpasser mares....(I *think* I got it right this time)

Uncle Abbie is an equivalent full brother to Lemon Drop Kid... interesting.

Wrenice

Hi Jellac

Interesting to see you writing on a topic other than Byerly Turk lines. Is this just another interest of yours or do you think the strategy might have some relevance for the few Byerly Turk stallions left?

I actually am interested in Key Ranch for another reason - being interested in the tail male line of Man O' War I am eagerly awaiting the first racers from Sand Ridge, a son of Known Fact. I have heard that some of the first foals look very good.

I have to reply to this topic, because I am blessed with a filly from the first crop by Sand Ridge. I was so impressed with this filly that my mare was bred back to Sand Ridge and has been checked in foal. I could not be happier.

My other mare was bred to Uncle Abbie. His filly Wrenice was an impressive winner of the Stallion Stakes, as noted. In addition, another filly Hermighty placed in the same race, after being totally left at the gate. He has produced a good runner in Sir Abbie, whose two year old brother Lord Abbie will have his first outing tonight. With Kingmambo on the top and Lassie Connection on the bottom, I think this sophmore stallion is excellent value for our market and beyond.

My only regret is that I do not have a third mare to breed to Tinners Way, who I also admire as a stallion.

Perhaps this is a good example of 'breeding back to the best of his female line"

Wrenice was very impressive in that win. As someone mentioned above Hermighty is another daughter who looks as though she may want some more ground to cover. Horrible start in the Stallion Stakes but came on to finish 5th with a lot of run left. Uncle Abbie is an interesting pedigree and obvioulsy with the success Lemon Drop Kid is having and now the good start for Uncle Abbie, Uncle Abbie should draw considerable attention for his value in the Texas market.

Someone mentioned Sand Ridge above, and his first foals have been outstanding. His book more than doubled this year, and much of it has to do with how those first foals looked when they hit the ground.

Another stallion that should be very strong for the Texas market is Special Rate. As Wrenice has Slew prominent top and bottom, daughters of Uncle Abbie are already being pointed at Special Rate for this very reason(which was part of the plan before Wrenice ever ran). Breeding will also go back to Lassie Dear via daughters Weekend Surprise and Lassie Connection.

To: Tinners Way above... are you Key Ranch, or affiliated with them? Since there's nothing in your profile here, I'm curious. They were nice enough to offer me a special deal on a breeding to Bannack. If you are affiliated with them then I want to take this oppotunity to offer my, hopefully, constructive criticism. I really don't like to see racing photos of stallions on farm's websites. I want to see a confomation shot. If you can only post one picture, I think that is the most important. The race record will speak for itself. Even if I like the pedigree, I won't take the time to travel to look at a stallion unless I've seen a photo that peaks my interest. AND, having made the mistake once, I will never breed to a stallion that I haven't seen in person........Lisa

Key Ranch

This wasn't directed to me but I've been to Key Ranch and each of their stallions looks better in the flesh than in photos.

Toadie---you're only a few hours away, go check them out. It's a day trip.

Hello Toadie, I am not Key Ranch but I do have an interest in a number of the stallions. You are correct that there needs to be conformation shots taken of Special Rate and Sand Ridge, and an updated shot of Uncle Abbie. They will be done this fall.

You are welcome to view the stallions at any time. There are normally some of each of the stallions foals on the property as well, so this will give you an idea of what you can expect. (With the exception of Special Rate and Bannack who's first crop will arrive in spring 2007) Key Ranch is owned by Joe and Sharon Kerby.

Here is what one of our more knowledgeable board members, Jorge, had to say about Seattle Slew breeding:

Those TB breeders that our not line-breeding to SS are not doing their homework.

To bring back class in the dam through foundation mares, one will look at those cluster mares in SS pedigree.

Busher---Striking BOY---Northirdchance---Alablue---Miss Disco BOY---Alanesian 3 SW---Glamour 4 SW---My Charmer 4 SW.

Seems to fit right in here.
