The win of Regional Council in the Anglesley Stakes G3 at the Curragh over the weekend might yet prove a little more noteworthy than the cursory glance often given to a 2yo stakes race at this time of the year.
Regional Council is yet another stakes winner for the young Cheveley Park Stud stallion Medicean. A son of Machiavellian out of the Storm Bird mare Mystic Goddess, Medicean is beginning to prove himself a more than capable stallion for the team at Cheveley Park with now 5 stakes winners from just two crops of racing age.
What makes it noteworthy is the fact that this is his second stakes winner out of a Danehill mare. While the impressive G1 winning 3yo filly Naninna is out of the former crack racemare Hill Hopper, Regional Council, an 80,000 pound purchase by Gainsborough Stud Management, is out of an unraced sister to G1 winner Regal Rose.
With the prolific Danehill having provided ample opportunity for Medicean to meet his daughters in years to come, it will be no surprise to see higher volume and better quality Danehill mares visit his court based on these results (that is not to say Cheveley Park haven't already sent him some nice Danehill mares!).
These results would no doubt prove even more interesting for breeders in Australia where Danehill and his sons have served/are serving an increasingly larger proportion of the broodmare population. As years go by a viable alternative, or should I say a horse that really appreciates the Danehill line, will prove to be a leading sire before too long by the pure fact that it invariably proves more profitable to breed away from a sireline than back upon itself.
A bout of colic a few seasons ago will most likely prevent any consideration of shuttling Medicean, but don't bet that someone hasn't called Cheveley Park this morning just to make sure.
