It is interesting to see how genetic affinities can carry along generations and still provide superior production.

The famous Tartan farm combination of Fappiano and In Reality is one such affinity. For some time now this combination has been seen to great effect in the production of stakes winners, especially in North America where the strains have gained considerable prominence.

Fappiano sired a number of stakes winners out of In Reality line mares including the likes of Tappiano, Serape, Jeano, Speakerphone, AP Jet and Pentelicus. Probably the best to be bred on the nick was not actually bred on the nick with Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled being out of a mare by Le Fabuleux, but having In Reality as the sire of his second dam. given that his second dam also produced a stakes winner by Fappiano it is hard not to disregard Le Fabuleux's involvement in Unbridled.

Despite having his second dam by In Reality, Unbridled did sire one of his best, Banshee Breeze out of a mare by In Reality's son Known Fact. A generation further on and his son Unbridled's Song has his two best, Splendid Blended and Unbridled Elaine out of In Reality line mares. Now Unbridled Time, the first stakes winner for Unbridled's Song had his first stakes winner on the weekend as a sire in the shape of Unbridled Ambiance. Four generations away from Fappiano, this filly (is there anything to the best on the cross being fillies?) is out of a mare by In Reality's son Relaunch.

A little interesting fact - the dam of Unbridled Ambiance is by a son of In Reality out of a Nijinsky II mare. Go back to one of Fappiano's best in Rubiano and you will see he is out of a Nijinsky II mare out of an In Reality mare.

When those TB breeders who research their families and find those bloodline affinity's and breed to those affinity's and find success when those matings produce many superior runners.

Their are many successful breeding patterns that produce the goods, but it takes time an patience to complete the task.

I have seen many well bred mares that didnt produce anything of note, until they were bred to a stalion of their bloodline afinity.

For those TB breeders that havent hit the gold at the end of the rainbow, dont give up, just do your home work and follow those positive nicking patterns to the winners circle.

John Nerud stood his wonderful Fappiano at his boss's Tartan Farms upon the brilliant Mr Prospector colt's retirement from racing. Mrs Frances A. Genter had already stood her wonderful stallion In Reality at Tartan for many years.

Mrs Genter had a significant broodmare band (as did Tartan) which, as you might expect, included many daughters and granddaughters of her special sire (In Reality).

As you might have guessed, when Fappiano was retired to Tartan, Mrs Genter chose to breed many of her In Reality (and related) mares to Fappiano.

Voila, the start of something very good.

My theory was speed, I wouldnt breed to a horse unless it had speed. But you have to keep the bottom in the female line. Man o War (Fair Play) sire line and Black Toney (Peter Pan) sire line.

I went back to those old sire lines that everyone else abandoned and I brought them back. Domino was my main thing. I took those old lines and bred them to the hot speed stallions.

I met John Nerud many years ago and after he purchased a copy of my book TB Nicking patterns John told me hey maybe I'll learn something that I didnt know before.

John Nerud is alive and well at 92 years young and may he breed many more champions before he is called upstairs. Thanks for the memories John, we love your style.

Yes and no. Certainly that high-test damline with In Reality's speed was a big factor, but take a look at the number and quality of stakes winners carrying the combination of Rough'n'Tumble and the French stayer Wild Risk. Aside from the full brothers Unbridled and Cahill Road, you have champion juvenile Macho Uno and Canadian champion Peaks and Valleys. I used to know more off the top of my head, but I am having an airhead moment.

Perhaps it might be fair to say that Le Fabuleux over the In Reality mare was the perfect genetic complement for a Mr P over Dr Fager stallion?
