Pedigree Query

I met some people at Winn Star (sp?) at dinner in Midway, Ky in a very celebratory mood after his 2nd place finish in The Belmont and they thought then that depending on his success for the rest of the season that his fee would be somewhere between 50K to 100K. He is VERY nicely bred with double copy mares for nine consecutive generations on his dam's side all the way back to La Troienne. The sire side is just as good with at least 5 consecutive generations of double copy mares. He HAS a large heart.

That was an impressive performance yesterday.

I wonder what kind of mares people would breed to Bluegrass Cat. He's a son of Storm Cat, and his dam is an AP Indy out of a Mr. Prospector mare.

Yes Ill-Bred... he has what I call a "closed pedigree." No matter, it is not all that likely that his connections will scrutinize the mares as closely as they do the payment for the stud fees and an all out effort for him to have 200 mares a year will be paramount. Perhaps they will even manage to make close inbreeding fashionable.

eeeeeeh... Obviously they won't get any Storm Cats.

There will be some who will be willing to try the 4x2/4x3 Seattle Slew, pointing to Atlantic Ocean.

Most of the 1st gen Prospector mares are old enough to be out of the breeding pool so you'd be seeing mostly 2nd gen mares ... which makes for 3x4 Prospector (and most likely 4x4). I'm not wild about it, but not totally offended by it. It's just going to happen and needs to be accepted. Kind of like knowing we were going to be flush with 4x4 Dancers.

There are still SOME lines out there that won't be total outcrosses, but the Dancer/Prospector in them won't be too close. I suspect WinStar will have a few Kris S. mares lined up already. I'd be looking for some Rahy/Cherokee Run mares.

Good call Sam. On top of your hypothesis, my crystal ball predicts a lot of the following as well (in no particular order):

Affirmed
Caro
Alydar
Unbridled's Song (4x5 Mr P--not too close)
Pleasant Colony
More Than Ready

I think he is 50k right now after the Haskell...If he wins the Travers it will be 75k and if he wins the Jockey Gold Cup and/or the Breeders Cup it will be 100k.

Some of the Man O' War line are still fairly free of Northern Dancer etc. (I forget which ones right now, just flew back from San Diego and am having NW US culture shock - no palm trees, and a shocking lack of condos).

And of course this is the place for Jellac to step in and suggest something from the Byerly Turk line.

I believe he is.

Where's Jellac when you need him/her? I can't remember if there are any tail male sires of the Tetrarch line left.

At best they're few and far between. I can't think of any in North America. (India, maybe.) The Tetrarch had fertility problems that he passed along to his sons & they to theirs.
