Texas-bred Dancing Squall dominates $68,000 Zia Park Distaff

10/8/2006

Texas-bred Dancing Squall became the first stakes winner for Texas sire River Squall with a dominating performance in the $68,000 Zia Park Distaff at the Hobbs, New Mexico, track on October 8.

The 3-year-old filly took on older distaffers in the 6-furlong race and after advancing steadily, drew away in the stretch to cross the wire eight lengths ahead of runner-up Fun'ngames Toknite in a time of 1:10.60. Dancing Squall, ridden by Manuel Montano, was the biggest longshot in the field at odds of 18-1. Ladysgotthelooks nabbed the show spot, followed by Red Lifesaver, Sandia's Flicka, Time to Divorce, Oh Yes I Am and Angliana Dancer.

Bred in the Lone Star State by Stephen Richard Baker, who also bred 2005 Texas Champion Older Filly Slewpy's Storm, Dancing Squall is out of the Lord Carson mare Lady of the Dance. She sold for a modest $5,700 at the 2004 Fasig-Tipton Texas Summer Yearling Sale and passed through the barns of several trainers before ending up in the hands of conditioner Clyde Veltmann. The Zia Park Distaff marked her second start for Veltmann. On September 15, the filly finished third in the Fair Queen Handicap at Albuquerque. She is owned by Diantha Veltmann. From 11 starts, Dancing Squall has earned $65,710 for a record of 3-1-2.

River Squall, a son of Summer Squall, stands at Dr. William Day's Cedar Creek Farm in Brenham, Texas. The 12-year-old stallion commanded a $1,500 fee in 2006.
