Abaginone-Half brother to dam of Bernardini

Postby Keith » Sat Nov 11, 2006 6:42 am

Abaginone looks interesting as he is a half brother to Cara Raela the dam of Bernardini. He is by Devil's Bag a full brother to Saint Ballado and Glorious Song. It sure is nice to finally see Spectacular Bid in the bloodlines of a horse like Bernardini. Bernardini's pedigree includes classic winners A.P. Indy, Seattle Slew, Secretariat, and Spectacular Bid.

I just thought Abaginone offers an interesting pedigree and could offer something to a pedigree as a broodmare sire.

sure would have been nice if he stayed in NY, instead of falling off the map.

Acey Deucey’s ontrack exploitsrevive her sire’s reputation By Frank MitchellSometimes, a loss in the American breeding market can create a bar-gain for someone in another country. The intense competition in theUnited States gives breeders from other countries an opportunity topurchase stallions with outstanding race records and pedigrees formodest sums if a horse has gone cold in the commercial market. That was the case with Abaginone, the former Questroyal stallionwho is finally making a name for himself after departing New York in2003 for Mexico. Abaginone had his best year as a sire in 2005, thanks in large part tothe accomplishments of the New York-bred racer Acey Deucey. Thefilly is from the fourth crop by Abaginone, a stakes-winning son ofDevil’s Bag. She was bred in New York by Gary Mottola, a realtor whodoes business in the metropolitan Washington area and who owns GlenGrey Farm in New Jersey.“This is the sort of filly you hope to produce,” said Mottola, who senthis mare Misty Mountains to Abaginone in 2002. “I was a partner inQuestroyal and in Abaginone.”But despite Mottola’s and Questroyal’s commitment to support thestallion, Abaginone was not doing well enough with his early crops onthe racetrack to warrant interest from enough other breeders. This isclearly seen in the number of foals in Abaginone’s last crop sired inNew York: 17 live foals born in 2004.In 2003, when Acey Deucey was a yearling, Questroyal receivedsome interest in Abaginone from Jose Maria Morera Gonzalez, alawyer in Mexico. Questroyal’s Chris Bernhard said that MoreraGonzalez “wanted to breed him mainly to his own mares, rather thanstanding him to many outside mares.” Since there is not as robust acommercial market in Mexico, Abaginone seemed an ideal choice. The time had come for Abaginone to move along. Not long after the2003 season, Bernhard said, “We received an offer that we had to pres-ent to the syndicate, and they voted to sell.”As a result, Morera Gonzalez was able to purchase a well-bred andhighly talented racehorse for a modest sum. On the track, Abaginonehad won seven of his 10 starts and $307,108. The high point of his rac-ing career came at 5, when he won a pair of Grade 3 races, the PotreroGrande Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Santa Anita and the Los AngelesHandicap at Hollywood Park. Those successes earned Abaginone a spot at stud, and he was pur-chased off the track by the Questroyal partnership. A dark bay-coloredhorse foaled in 1991, Abaginone is out of the Spectacular Bid mare OilFable. After Questroyal sold him, Abaginone’s fortunes as a sire warmed in2004 and heated up considerably in 2005 when he was responsible fora quartet of stakes winners, including Uncle Camie, who won theGrade 3 Bold Ruler, and Grab Bag.In fact, had he remained in New York, Abaginone would be amongNY BREDS 42FINISH LINEContinued on page 44Acey Deucey (3), DianeNelson up, heads toward vic-tory in the Grade 1 Prioressat Belmont Park in July. I have an Abaginone daughter out of a Carson City dam. She is currently in foal to Fisher Pond, who is A P Indy son.
Her first foal by Snowbound was a stunning "crop out" and is now a hunk of a yearling.

Uncle Camie, one of Abaginone's really hard knocking runners, is now at stud in NY.

didn't Brooke own a daughter of Misty Mountains.. or the mare herself.. Misty was a older mare at Questroyal they called her Grandma. I also knew Cammie's dam Final Style too. She was a nice mare. Glad he can take over where Dad left off. And good to hear Abaginone is doing well.

But isnt that the way it always is.. sell something THEN it goes up in Value. It's like watching Antique Roadshow, and finding out something you sold at a yard sale for $1.00 is worth Millions..

Best in Luck Abaginone.. be nice to the ladies, and don't scare them off with your NewYork-whinnie!!

Amorera, where in Mexico is he located. Does your farm have a website with any new pictures of him or any of his foals?? What price does he stand for?
