Calling all Seattle Slew line mares

Postby brogers » Sun Nov 19, 2006 7:00 pm

If they haven't done a direct mailing to all Seattle Slew line mare owners in the country then Three Chimneys should start after Eugene Melnyk's 2yo filly Sealy Hill turned the Glorious Song Stakes in Canada into an eight length rout today.

In becoming Point Given's 5th stakes winner, Sealy Hill also became his third stakes winner (all out of different mares) out of mares sired by Seattle Slew line stallions. Sealy Hill follows the G1 winning two year old Point Ashley and also the stakes winning 2yo filly Naseem (all two year olds and all fillies) to be bred on the cross.

Here is the twist. Neither Thunder Gulch, nor his sire Gulch have shown any real affinity for Seattle Slew line mares. Thunder Gulch has 34 named foals out of mares by Seattle Slew and his sons for not a single stakes winner while his sire Gulch has 38 named foals for just 2 stakes winners (which is 5%, less than his overall production of 7%). Interestingly if you run a Werk Nick rating on Thunder Gulch with a Seattle Slew line mare it is rated an A, based on Gulch/Seattle Slew even though if you accounted for opportunity there are 72 named foals by Gulch and his son Thunder Gulch out of mares by Seattle Slew and his sons for just 2 stakes winners (2.7%) - go figure!

So now that Point Given has sired three stakes winners out of Seattle Slew line mares there must be a reason for it and one has to look at his female line for clues. While Alydar has never really combined that well with Seattle Slew, Turkoman, the broodmare sire of Point Given has. There are three stakes winners (from just 21 named foals) by sons of Seattle Slew out of Turkoman mares while there is one stakes winner from just four named foals by Turkoman out of a Seattle Slew line mare. An unprovable summation but maybe Turkoman's broodmare sire Table Play, bred on the same Nasrullah/Princequillo nick as Seattle Slew's broodmare sire Poker, might have something to do with it

Relaunch (second damsire of Point Given) might also be a factor here; Tiznow and Officer are both Relaunch over Slew.

Hi Byron,

Interesting; and in this context its also well worth noting that Seattle Slew is found in the 2nd damsire's sire position (aka 3rd gen) of Point Determined.

Also, even though Sealy Hill hasn't just yet been added into G1Goldmine, the Point Given / Seattle Slew cross still manages to get a G1W VGS of 28.72 (based on 1) and a GSW VGS of 18.53 (2).

Both these scores are very very high (still, is it possible that Seattle Slew having stood at Three Chimneys has anything to do with it??).

Relaunch (second damsire of Point Given) might also be a factor here; Tiznow and Officer are both Relaunch over Slew.

Really good point, Mahubah.
While Alydar has never really combined that well with Seattle Slew, ...
Capote has sired 3 stakes horses by Alydar and 1 stakes horse by Saratoga Six (Alydar). Both General Meeting (Sire of General Challenge, et al) and A.P. Valentine (Dual Classic placed) are out of Alydar mares. Event of the Year (Seattle Slew) has one stakes horse o/o an Alydar mare. I believe there definitely is an affinity between Alydar & Slew.
