Any thoughts on this stallion? I was thinking of using him for my mare.
He does have small crops though...wonder why?

I groomed a filly by him this year (2yo). She is awesome. Won her 2nd out, should have done more but her shins got a bit sore and they want her as a 3yo stakes horse, so she was sent out to winter early. Gorgeous, and absolutley correct. I just adore her. Dont know much about him otherwise though. Sorry.
A woman needs 2 animals in her life-the horse of her dreams, and a jackass to pay for it!
Service Stripe started out standing for $500 in Michigan. While he has an interesting pedigree, he was not all that successful as a racehorse. He made 22 starts in a four year career with a 10-3-3 record to earn his $130K. His only blacktype came at 3 and 5, in stakes with such minor prizes that they do not actually count as black type by today's standards. It was only after the success of a filly by him, Cashier's Dream, that he got a trailer ride into Kentucky and a spot at a "big" farm. Perhaps, though, his small book size may be related to being unable to completely shake off the "regional stallion" dust. In Kentucky, the stallion market is chock full of pedigreed horses who were graded stakes winners, so perhaps Service Stripe just doesn't stand out to breeders.

Madelyn,
Thank you. I didn't know he started off racing in Michigan. We actually just raced in MI for the first time this year! :-0
He has 5% SW from starters which is decent for his price and he improves his mares significantly. Only 20% of all stallions improve their mares and he's one of them! He is getting mares that are average and bumping them up.
I think race record gets more irrelevant as the stallion's sire record lengthens. I mean, Not for Love wasn't a great racehorse either and look at his numbers! Likewise, Silver Charm was a great racehorse and will probably fail as a stallion! I think SS getting 6 in 1:09 is pretty decent. Wish my mare could have done it! :-0
Have you heard anything about what he sires in terms of soundness, speed vs. stamina, disposition?
Do you know his disposition? I know DM was rumored to be nasty!
I have to make a trip to KY this coming year to see him. However, I already booked to Pioneering for 2007 so am thinking of SS or Slew City Slew for 2008.
Thank you for your the information!

I know of a mare by Service Stripe who has great conformation and completely out ran her pedigree (IMHO). She made almost ten times the combined earnings of her dam and all siblings. No other horse in her first two generations broke six figures and only one broke $50k.
She has no full siblings or siblings from the same sire line, so either have to chalk it up to fluke or the sire.
Her trainer said her temperment was great.

Sorry if my post sounded like I was "judging" Service Stripe.. I meant only to address his relatively small book.
There is no doubt that he "improved" Jerry's Sister when she threw Cashier's Dream. And I agree that the race record tends to fade if offspring outrun their sire. And certainly, Service Stripe was a better racehorse than Pioneering
but you can't fault either horse as a sire of racehorses. Since you are breeding to race, these are all good horses to think about, depending on the mare.
Hopefully, Slew City Slew will still be available to breed to in 2008... he will be 24 then.

Thanks Kami for sharing!
Madelyn, No, it didn't sound judgmental!! Yeah, unfortunately, we are in the $5,000 range and want to only breed to proven stallions. Thus, my list is pretty short! :-0 I would add Northern Spur but think he's more turf and this mare is pretty much dirt/phenotypically and genotypically.
If I had more money, I would go to Runaway Groom or Crafty Prospector. *sigh*

I believe old "Crafty P" has been pensioned. Once my stallion gets "proven" hopefully he will make it onto your radar screen.
Another inexpensive horse that seems to get runners is Bright Launch. I also liked Evansville Slew a lot. I was sorry to see him go.

I didn't know that about CP. I knew he had a problem (colic or something)but then I thought he recovered.
I always seem to like the "Good old boys" with old being the operative word!! I would have bred to Lord Avie, Bates Motel, Notebook, etc..... Unfortunately, we are doing the breeding thing now and not a few years ago!
I will keep Bright launch in mind. Yes, ES was good. I think he got sent to LA.
Who is your stallion?

He's my avatar, Rocking Trick (ARG).
He was a multiple G1 SW and placed in 7 other Graded stakes, a very solid racehorse that ran a 1000meter G1 sprint in 54.33 seconds. He retired sound at 7 after hitting the board in 19 of 30 lifetime starts. He won short and long, on dirt and turf. His first crop are weanlings now. His half brother, by Pulpit, was the session topper at Keeneland September and went for $1.3 million. He is targeted mainly as a breed to race sire and priced accordingly.
Thanks for the opportunity to pimp him shamelessly....

Might I ask which mare you are refering too?

Shame that you can't. They're both heading toward 28 and it's amazing that they're still going. I didn't read about any pensioning. Anybody heard anything? I had no idea that Slew City Slew was that old. So strange isn't it? To see so many top breed to race sires aging out. In not too many years it'll be the commercial big wheels, Storm Cat and AP Indy.
