Hello all. I'm a long time lurker but first time poster. I was curious how leading first crop sires worked out so I put this together and am posting it because I thought it might be of interest. Some one hit wonders (Sportin' Life - Bet Twice, Farma Way - Cobra King, Turn and Count?) along with those who are shaping the breed.

Not ONE son of Storm Cat, huh?

What was the basis for their being designated a "leading sire"? Total earnings? Winners from foals? Winners from starters?

Johannesburg (not Street Cry) is 2006's leading freshman sire by total earnings, winners, stakes winners, and graded winners.

what is listed is from the Blood Horse and is ranked by total progeny earnings. they have Street Cry as #1. obviously one big earner can drive a horse to the top of the list as it did for Sportin' Life, Tiznow, Farma Way and others.

Those Bloodhorse rankings you are referring to are not worldwide earnings...

Johannesburg led all freshman sires in winners, stakes winners, graded stakes winers, and total progeny earnings. Obviously, he did so with a much larger book than any of the other stallions, but he is clearly the champion freshman sire (for all that's worth).

And I have no connection to the horse, financial, emotional or otherwise....

I never understood the bloodhorse list as they cover some nations but not all. Anyone know which nations the exclude and why?

I believe that Bloodhorse excludes all Southern Hemisphere runners, and I'm not sure what they do with Asia.

Farma Way had a Fish and Fowl pedigree and his son Cobra King inherited the same.

Sportin' Life and his son Bet Twice were Hit and Missy in the production of superior runners.

Turn and Count was a hot and cold stallion, as his left and right wing were recessive.

I wish they went on percentages overall. Johannesburg had twice as many 2 year olds than everyone else and it gives him an unfair advantage (part of the Coolmore plan.)

I agree that total earnings is not the fairest way to determine top sire.

Coolmore also capitalizes on how the public focuses on the big horse.

Never mind that Stallion X had 200-plus mares and an abysmal start % , win %, and % of stakes winners, he had two Grade 1 winners! He can get the big horse! Stud fee triples!

It's ridiculous....Yonaguska has a ton of winners and none of them are worth anything...the same will probably be true of Chapel Royale. Who are these people that Coolmore/Ashford can count on for 200 mares a year?

It amazes me how breeders would even think a Coolmore stallion is profitable when their book sizes are so huge. I loved the ad I saw recently for FuPeg that stated yearlings sold in 2006 went up to 1,000,000. He had (1) million dollar yearling, and Demi O'Byrne signed the ticket.

I think long time breeders and people who value a dollar are very skeptical of the way the stud game is being played. If you're on a budget of any sort(and who isn't save few) then SW percents/Graded Stake winners/AEI to CI/SI etc. are scrutinized and evaluated along with confirmation.. median earnings etc.

Seems sales prices trump accomplishments on the track... yet how many BIG sales are actually legitimate? Not all that many. On the track either they can or they can't and statistics used for analyzing such tell the real story.

There are many good stallions standing for $2,500-$5,000.. some up to $10,000-$15,000 and studs like Dehere at $20,000 and Silver Deputy at $30,000 merit consideration for the right mares.

Minus Distorted Humor (who was modestly priced when he started stud), many of the top First Year Sires haven't done much since. Tiznow's best two year olds were injured shortly after turning 3. Successful Appeal has done little, Stravinsky is in Japan, Valid Expectations is nothing much, Honour and Glory would be a better regional sire, and the list goes on. I think End Sweep would have proven to be a decent sire had he not died prematurely.

Coolmore figured out how to play the numbers game and produce champion sires by breeding in mass proportions. It really cheapens the phrase "Champion First Crop Sire" when you can win it by breeding to the most mares.
