I received a letter from Darby Dan Farm today offering me a stands and nurses contract for Saarland, since his fertility questions are being managed well this year. He is not backed up with second and third covers, so they have a little room on his docket for this season. I was offered this because of NO FOAL from last breeding season to him.
If you have an interest and your mare is just waiting in Kentucky without a date to the dance, you may want to contact them for a deal. You can PM me if you want further details. I'd rather not state the terms I was offered, but let's say it was very generous!

Henthorn... where are you coming up with these insinuations regarding Saarland's fertility?? In 2005, he bred 120 mares with 94 live foals resulting... a live foal percentage of 78%, well above the national average of 64%.
And if he were in fact having fertility issues, why did they turn around and breed him to 104 mares in 2006? A problematic breeding season is usually followed by a sharp decline in mares bred the following year... they certainly wouldn't breed 104 mares if he were having difficulties.
So again I ask... where are you coming up with your information?

You sure are a skeptic, FloridaGators. Good for you! This is verbatim the first two paragraphs of the letter from the Darby Dan stallion director Ryan A. Norton, dated March 13, 2007.
"As you may know, we went through some growing pains with Saarland's fertility last year. Eventually we got on track, but the first half of the 2006 breeding season for Saarland wasn't up to our standards and given his popularity we got backed up in the latter stages of the season. Thanks to lessons learned, we are happy to report that we are firmly on track through the first month with 3 of his 5 mares checked in foal.
We know that you did not end up with a Saarland foal this year but we want to thank you for your support in 2006. We are confident we now have reasonable control of his fertility and with an anticipated book of about 75 mares there is room to add a few mares. In appreciation..."

Hi Floridagators,
If Henthorn told me that the sky was falling I'd look for cover.
Saarland's fertility has been a challenge in each season that he's stood at stud. The mare needs to be covered as close to ovulation as possible.
You could have called Darby Dan and they'd have explained how they handle the situation.
