Old Deutronomy

Postby wallinga » Thu Mar 22, 2007 9:15 pm

can anyone tell me what's going on with Old Deutronomy, they say he's standing at Walmac but he is for sale at the Easter Thoroughbred sale here in Oz?

I've found sort of an answer in the racing post

"OLD DEUTERONOMY, a Group-1-placed two-year-old for Ballydoyle in 2003, has been the subject of a last-minute switch from Kentucky.

He was advertised to enter stud at John T L Jones jnr's Walmac Farm LLC for a fee of $4,000 this year, but will instead go to Australia, where he is catalogued to sell on April 16 as lot 288 in the William Inglis & Son Select Weanling and Broodmare Sale in Newmarket, New South Wales, Australia.

The son of Storm Cat, now six, will be offered by the Scone-based Lincoln Farm as agent. His cataloguepage states that he has not been to stud.

He was entered as a racing or stallion prospect in the 2005 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale by agent Four Star Sales, of which Jones is a partner. However, he was withdrawn.

He last ran when unplacedin the Marfa Stakes at Turfway Park in September 2006, for the partnership of Abbott Properties, John T L Jones jnr, Gene Voss and Jorge Cardemil, with Jones training.

Bred in Kentucky by Pacelco S A, Old Deuteronomy was a promising two-year-old for Sue Magnier and Aidan O'Brien, winning a maiden at Newmarket on his debut in May and running five more times, with his best result a runner-up finish to stablemate One Cool Cat in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. He was also second in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes.

He won twice from 13 subsequent starts in the US, and was second in the black-type Sea O Erin Breeders' Cup Mile Handicap.

Tracing to the Oaks winner Noblesse, Old Deuteronomy is from the family of Slightly Dangerous – the dam of Commander In Chief and Warning – and Rainbow Quest. "

It still doesn't explain why, with a fantastic family by a commercial sire with group one form, he's in a public auction when many studs would readilly have syndicated him here.

Just out of interest, what does everyone think he'll make?

I don't know any particulars at all regarding the decision to send him to Oz, but I could try some guesses.

With Storm Cat over Seeking the Gold (Mr. Prospector) and Northern Dancer, the available mare population for him here in Storm Cat/Mr P/ND land might be somewhat slim. They might have advertised him and got no bookings, or so few that they switched them off to another horse. Better no crop than a very small crop. Also, he is grade/group placed in England and Ireland, well this reminds me of Minardi.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

It's without doubt one of the best turf pedigrees in the world, Warning was a great horse, Commander in Chief won a derby, super sires Scenic and Rainbow Quest are there too.

Seeking the Gold also does quite well here from limited opportunities, so there is no question of Old Deutronomy's appeal here (I just hope he's as cheap as he was at Walmac)

I thought some of you americans with your ears to the ground might have heard some inside info. Also, history shows us that stallions at public auction make less than they would when syndicated so that decision is baffling.

I don't think that he will make here and its a pity to see him hawked this way.
It may be that he's going to be "sold" for a lot of money and thereby get some advertising in the ring. i.e. The sellers might buy him.

Yes. It is a very large sale with some interesting lots, both in the weanlings and the broodmares.

It will be a rather exciting sale too. Have you picked out any mares? I understand if you can't mention them, if you intend buying.

The Easter broodmare sale is a tricky one, there are a few people coming down off the highs of the yearling sale, and prices can be inflated. But others can get under the radar, last year we picked up a Spectrum mare from a half sisiter to reganza by Chiefs Crown for a song.

As far as this year go's. I'm going for imported mares, there are a few nice Secretariat's (with a little age on them) a Pleasant Colony, a Slip Anchor, a Rahy and a couple of Diesis mares. There are also some Success Express mares in the sale worth looking at. It is a great sale, but daunting, and alot of mares prices are going to vary greatly depending on who they are in foal to.
