Would like to get some opinions on proven Stallions for under 20K.

I like Sky Classic. He'll get you a good runner on dirt and turf.

It was Runaway Groom. Now, it's got to be Mutakddim, Smoke Glacken, Military, or maybe even Pleasant Tap. Exchange Rate was at $10,000, but I don't know how high he'll go in another year or two.

Exchange Rate (3rd Crop), Muktakddim, & E Dubai (2nd Crop, but off to a great start, seems very consistent).

Last I looked Smoke Glacken was out of this range at 25K.

Ack! Maybe Gainesway means $25,000 Canadian? LOL!

FREUD Full brother to Giants Causeway...proven stakes/GS producer and his foals are running all over the country and a few across the pond. Stands for $10k in NY...full brother stands PRIVATELY last fee I heard was $250-$300,000.00!

Bright Launch was high on my short list this past season....but opted to return to NY one last season. I think bright Launch is an exceptional value!

Royal Academy and Woodman are my choices.

Depending on what I wanted to do with the foal would determine which sire I selected

If you're looking "low end," how can ya beat Evansville Slew or Slew City Slew?

Well Evansville Slew is in Oklahoma, I think. But he is a good horse, as was Diazo, who is now in Illinois.

Best proven sire under $20K is a very broad topic.. it is easier with a geographic limit, and a price RANGE.. like $10-20K.

Maven- What is the attraction with Mizzen Mast? What has he proven so far?

I believe he has 88 three year olds, most of which are just now getting to the track.

His Avg Earnings/starter is $23,812 (more than stud fee) which is very good especially when you consider they'll be better older horses. Avg Earnings /start $5,502.

His CURRENT YEAR AEI is 1.44 over a 1.57 CI which again, is great, especially considering they should only get better and when tried on turf, and the percentages will "set" with more runners to work with.

His numbers, early in his stud career, are setting up exactly like some of the best, consistent sires who annually improve their mares. You just have to watch the trends and use common sense in gaging stud performance. In two years, I have little doubt he will be a nice 30k (if not more) stallion.

His numbers are very similar, but even better, to the similarly bred Alphabet Soup at this stage in that stallions career.

I was just poring over the Blood Horse Marketwatch list of North American Stallions by 2007 earnings, and checking on 2007 stud fees for some of the standouts over time who are still at stud in NA.

These are the only ones of the top 200 who are at stud for 20K or less, have lifetime 7+% SW, and 2+% GSW. Crafty Prospector and Runaway Groom are both on the list, but both have been pensioned.

Pleasant Tap-15K, 8%SW, 3.4%GSW; Pioneering-5K,9, 2.8; Sky Classic-12.5K, 8, 3.4; Alphabet Soup-15K, 7, 2.6; and Quiet American-20K, 7, 3.2 in KY, and Peaks and Valleys-8K, 7, 2.4 in Ontario.

This includes NA and European earnings only. Newer stallions by definition with such great statistics would be higher in their fees. Admittedly, some of the old-timers had their best crops long ago. I was surprised at some of the stud fee/GSW ratios. It certainly pays to have good stallion management and marketing.

In the ALMOST category are the studs on the list who stand for 20K or less, with greater than 2% GSW, with only 6-6.99% lifetime SW. Pine Bluff was in this company, but has been pensioned.

I found Lemon Drop Kid-20K, 2.9%GSW, Slew City Slew-6K, 2.3; Out of Place-7.5K, 2.2; Petionville-15K,2.4; Cape Town-10K, 2.2% in KY. Montbrook-15K, 2.3; and Exchange Rate-10K, 3.10% are in FL.
